But shoulder problems led to a slow start and his eventual end when he tore the labrum in his right shoulder while pitching in a Minor League exhibition game March 20, 2006. Mori did not have surgery, instead opting for rehabilitation in the hope such an option would allow him to pitch in 2007. The Rays released Mori in January and re-signed him to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training. The Seibu Lions received approximately $750,000 from the Rays for the right to sign Mori. Mori signed a two-year deal with the Rays that guaranteed him $1.2 million.
