S1: Gisela Dulko def Ai Sugiyama 6/3 6/4
This match was really surprising to me. Neither Dulko nor Sugiyama could get
the ball on the court for more than 2 shots. Sugiyama was desperate to hit the
ball flat and hard and she was very very far from the player I thought I was
going to watch. Gisela was playing an ok match, not to broght though, what was
surprising it that at the end, she didnt hesitate at all and she clinched the
victory.
S2: Paola Suarez def Akiko Morigami 6/4 6/0
Paola started the match moving around akiko and making her feel the pressure.
Paola hits harder than Akiko and that helped her a lot also. Paola moved upto
5-0 in a blink of an eye, but Akiko reacted. She started hitting her double
handed shots real flat and low and did a couple of winners along with several
"c'mon"s. In 5/4 Paola served well and regained control of the match. In the
second Akiko disappeared again and Paola played like the almost top 10 player
she is. 6/0 shows it.
S3: Paola Suarez def. Ai Sugiyama 6/7 6/3 7/6 ret.
Finally I saw Ai playing as I expected. I was actually waiting that she did
that today. She went for the shots, this time in control ofthe power. The first
few games were wonderful. Paola hit 9 winners in the first few games and the
match was thrilling. A couple of good points gave Ai the first set, but Paola
is a fighter and though she was having a hard time was able to recover on the
second set to close it 6/3. The level of play though, was lower, many ues and
few winners, but long rallies were very common. In the third Sugiyama started
to playreal good tennis, broke Paola a couple of times but finally she started
to have problems with her body, so many rallies that she was running low of air.
She started to serve from below at one point and finally gave up at 6/7 in the
third, such a pity.
S4: Akiko Morigami def. Gisela Dulko 6/2 6/2
Akiko really focused, double handed winners all the time and Gisela didnt seem
to want to play she made tons of ues. I was hoping she would fight a little bit
but she didnt she just kept double faulting and making UEs, while Morigami was
determined to finish that off and she did. Easy 6/2 6/2 for her.
D: Diaz Oliva/Tarabini def. Asagoe/Obata 7/6 6/7 6/2
Sensational Match. Tarabini just rocks in doubles, going to the net all the
time, very very smart player. Without any hard shots or anything like that, she
just made Asagoe and Obata go crazy on the court, such a smart player. Mariana
showed that she doesnt have a clue in doubles. had Paola been on her place, it
would have been like 6/3 6/3. On the japanese side, I was impressed by Shinobu's
baseline shots, she hits it real hard and is a very smart player also. Saori
Obata was the weak one on the team.
but did some good shots also, but Asagoe was the one commanding the team. In
the end, for me, the best match of the tie, great points, the players were
enjoying the match a lot, both teams smiling all the time, people stayed till
the end to watch it, even when it was not an important game.
I have to also remark that the Japanese team is adorable, you could see them
smiling all the time, signing authographs the Japanese captain helping the
girls all the time in anything he could.
In conclusion, a delicious tie to watch.
