Li Leads Field at New Rabat Event
RABAT, Morocco - After finishing as runner-up last week in Estoril, China's Na Li will make another run at a title this week in Rabat.
The highest ranked Chinese player will hold the top seed this week at the Grand Prix S.A.R. La Princesse Lalla Meryem and will be looking to make it through to the championship match, much like she did on Sunday at the Estoril Open, where she fell to qualifier Lucie Safarova in three sets.
Li will face Australia's Nicole Pratt in her opening round match.
Nuria Llagostera Vives will be the event's No.2 seed this year and will face Moroccan wild card Bahia Mouhtassine in the first round. Llagostera Vives picked up some good clay court experience two weeks ago when she helped lead Spain past Argentina in Fed Cup play.
Former finalist Maria Elena Camerin has been awarded the No.3 seed at this year's event and will take on Michaela Pastikova in her opening match. Camerin finished as runner-up to Zsofia Gubacsi in the 2001 finale when the event was held in Casablanca.
Other seeds competing this week in Rabat are No.4 Tathiana Garbin, No.5 Tamarine Tanasugarn, No.6 Jie Zheng, No.7 Arantxa Parra Santonja and No.8 Claudine Schaul.
2004 champion Emilie Loit will also return to defend her title and will face Maria Sanchez Lorenzo in the first round. Loit won the Estoril last year before heading to Casablanca the following week to defeat Ludmila Cervanova in the final.
This is the first year an event on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour has been staged in Rabat, but the fifth straight year the country of Morocco has played host to the Tour. From 2001 to 2004, this event was held in Casablanca. Previous winners include Loit, Rita Grande, Patricia Wartusch and Zsofia Gubacsi.
