Sania Mirza: already a phenomenon
If you’ve not seen Mirza yet, then don’t miss her at the French Open later this month. Aged 18, she has risen to stardom in her home country in the space of just two months. The first Indian to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open last January, she was victorious on home turf in Hyderabad two weeks later to become the first Indian to win a title on the WTA circuit. Judging by her burgeoning talent, it is likely to be the first of many.
Na Li: China’s tennis awakening
Now aged 23, Li has left her tennis breakthrough late, having endured numerous fruitless seasons due to injury. Last October, she became the first Chinese player in history to win on the WTA circuit, after coming through the qualifiers in front of her home crowd at Guangzhou. A finalist on clay at Estoril this season, she will be watched closely in Paris, as will several of her compatriots who are following the path she has forged into the world of professional tennis.
