London: It has taken Sania Mirza just one memorable performance on her Centre
Court debut to make the world appreciate her skills with the racket.
As she matched the US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova stroke for stroke, her
powerplay drew wide applause from veteran Pam Shriver.
Shriver, a former doubles partner of the great Martina Navratilova, who is here
commentating for BBC television heaved rich praise on the 18-year old Indian
player.
“Sania is really one of the most exciting players that I’ve seen. She really
explodes and her blistering pace doesn’t allow her opponent to get into her
rhythm. She is a natural player and she sees the ball well,” was how Shriver
described the Indian’s game during the course of her memorable match.
“This girl plays at a blistering pace. However, more than brute force, she has
the timing. Her forehand is not only hard but it is difficult to read. She has
a bit of Steffi Graf in her.”
Top seed American Lindsay Davenport was also impressed by Sania’s powerplay.
“She definitely has it in her and we need to watch out for this Indian girl,”
said Davenport.
