Peng, meanwhile, became the first Chinese woman to reach the quarterfinals at a
Tier I event after the 19-year-old upset No. 3 seed Elena Dementieva in the
second round and another Russian, No. 16 Dinara Safina, in the third.
Earlier in the day, unseeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan became the first player to
move into the semifinals after a quick, efficient 6-1, 6-2 victory over 15-year
-old Bulgarian Sesil Karatantcheva.
"It feels great (to get into the semis)," said Sugiyama, who improved to 19-18
after stringing together four consecutive victories for the first time this
year, including a three-set upset over No. 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova on Thursday.
"I didn't have a good half of the year and it was really tough for me to find
the motivation.
"But I'm really having fun again and willing to work. When I perform well, I'm
really excited. I'm getting a good rhythm here and I found the way I play again
."
Karatantcheva, who turns 16 on Monday, was looking to advance to her first WTA
career semifinal. But the steady play of the speedy 30-year-old, coupled with a
strained right calf muscle injury by the Bulgarian at 4-1 in the second set,
dashed her hopes in the romp, which lasted just 65 minutes.
"The score looks easy but for me it was not easy at all," Sugiyama said. "She
runs pretty good side to side. If I had a long rally it was good to me because
I could put her down a little bit. It's more mental game, especially the second
set."
In the penultimate round, Sugiyama will meet countrywoman Akiko Morigami, who
sent Russian teenager Anna Chakvetadze packing, 6-3, 6-4.
It is the first time two Japanese women are to meet in the semifinals of a Tier
I event.
"I'm excited to play against Ai because she's always been the No. 1 player for
us in the last couple years and I've been No. 3 or No. 4," said the 61st-ranked
Morigami, who has dropped both career matches with Sugiyama. "She's obviously a
great player and it's going to be a great match.
"I have a lot of confidence in myself and sure she does too. I'm going to keep
fighting and just find a way to win."
Chakvetadze was the lone Russian remaining in the 56-player draw that boasted
11 - including five of the top nine seeds - at the start of the week.
