Meng struck early, opening a 3-0 lead after breaking Mirza in the second game and saving a break point on her own serve in the third game. Mirza fought back to tie the set at 3-3, but in the seventh game, Meng saved a break point to push ahead 4-3. After trading breaks in the eighth and ninth games, Mirza held serve to tie the set once again at 5-5. That was all Mirza could do as Meng went on to win the final two games. “My injury happened during the match,” Mirza said. “I went to hit an overhead and it felt like I basically hyper extended my back. I couldn’t really move very well after that, and it felt very stiff.” Mirza added: “It’s not the way I wanted to end my year, but I can’t control that. I’ve never retired from a match in my life. It was hard. I’m going to take a break from tennis now. It has been a long year and a very eventful one.
