每年澳網都會發放外卡給予亞洲男女選手各一位，由於去年沒有舉辦亞洲錦標賽，因此今年外卡由未能進入會內賽中排名最高的亞洲選手取得。 Istomin連續第二年持外卡參賽，去年闖進第二輪；袁夢去年則是從會外賽晉級至第二輪敗給小威。 Australian Open wildcards have also been awarded to the two highest ranked Asian players not yet in the main draw, Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan and Yuan Meng from China. This is Istomin’s second appearance at the Australian Open. In 2008 he was also awarded a wildcard and won an epic four set match against Lukas Lacko. He went on to push Lleyton Hewitt to four sets before losing in the second round. Currently ranked 109, Istomin improved his ranking by more than 100 points in 2008 with wins at two Challenger events in Uzbekistan, and reached the finals in the Ukraine and Russia. Currently ranked 127, Yuan’s Australian Open wildcard ensures a much easier passage into the tournament than in 2008 when she battled through quallies to reach the maindraw.
