Age no barrier for Japanese marvel
伊達公子擊敗地主選手晉級會內賽後，又一次登上澳網首頁的新聞。

They often say it’s easy to view the past with rose-tinted spectacles, but
Kimiko Date Krumm refuses to do so. She's just happy to still be playing
injury-free.
At 38 years of age, the Japanese player is the oldest at Melbourne Park, and
swept past Australian Marija Mirkovic 7-5 6-1 on Saturday to qualify for the
main draw.
This time 15 years ago, Date Krumm embarked on a journey that took her to an
Australian Open semifinal, and in November 1995 she reached a career high of
number four.
But the player would rather focus on the future rather than reflect too much
on the past.
“[It’s] already a long time to go,” she said. “Of course I have good
memories of Australia because in 1994 when I was playing in Sydney I won the
tournament, and then I was to be the top 10 player. Then I was in the
semifinal in Australian Open.
“But this time always I don’t think not so much the past because if I think
about I was the No.4, I was in the semifinal of Australia, of course, [it’s]
difficult to play qualifying.”
While her body may take a little more time to recover than those of her
younger counterparts, Date Krumm has found solace in the locker room with
fellow veteran Rennae Stubbs.
“She said 'good job',” Date Krumm laughs. “Then she said 'I’m 37 years
old and you are 38, so you are older'. She said 'I’m not the oldest player
anymore'. We were talking a little bit about age ... Sometimes when she plays
in doubles, even two players, [are] still younger than opponent.”
And Martina Navratilova, Date Krumm’s idol, has also inspired her. “When I
play with Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf in March, I had exhibition
match. She (is) still good. Many people watching that match with Navratilova.
Of course, many people inspire many things.”
The Japanese wonder, who could easily pass for someone in her 20s, is a
walking testament to the saying that age is just a number. She has rattled
through three qualifying matches and says she has ‘no problem’ with her
body. “My physical [side] is no problem, so I don’t care about age,” she
said.
However, Date Krumm did concede it would be her body that decides the fate of
her future. An old Achilles tendon injury is always at the back of her mind,
so she prefers to take each day as it comes rather than making grand designs
on the future. “After here, I decide where I am going,” she smiled.
