然後四強在Philippe Chatrier不敵Arantxa Sanchez Vicario;
Seles,
Q. Is that why you come back to tennis, for moments like that?
KIMIKO DATE KRUMM: Because of him. (laughter.) He's my husband. Two years
ago? No, we married in 2001, and then after, when I met him he's a racing
driver. He love the sport. He love the tennis.
So always he ask to me, Why don't you play tennis one more time? This is just
for fun, not serious.
Then he want to see me. Because when I met him, already I was retired, so he
never see my only he watched, he was watching me on TV, not real. That's why.
Then he push me. In 2007 match, I had exhibition match in Japan with Steffi
Graf and Martina Navratilova in Japan. So I start to practice a little bit,
and start exercise also.
After that, then we discuss we continue to play or not, and then he push me
very hard. I just decide to come back on the tour. Yes.
Q. Is this a win you could have imagined when you did first start to come
back on a court at a Grand Slam? Does it make you glad you came back?
KIMIKO DATE KRUMM: What you mean?
Q. Does a win make you happy that you did decide to come back?
KIMIKO DATE KRUMM: In first year I only play in Japan, so I never think about
the Grand Slam. Then after one year, almost one year, and then I can enter to
the Australian Open qualifying. My ranking was maybe 160 or something. And then
I spoke with my husband again, and then he said we got to continue to play in
the world tour or I stay only in Japan. Then he said, Why not? So I start to
decide to play world tour.
So I never think about the Grand Slam. And then only the two years ago when I
played in the qualifying in Australian Open I'm very happy there, and then I
was qualify. Then last year here I injury my calf, and then I retire in
qualifying first round.
So today I'm very, very happy to play in Suzanne Lenglen Court. That's
because I have a big memory here in. In 1995 I play maybe I play against Iva
Majoli. I beat her, and then I play Philippe Chatrier in the semifinal with
Arantxa Sanchez.
I don't like so much red clay, but today I beat Safina, so it's big, big
memory again. Even I lost for example, if I lost, still I'm very happy to be
here. I play against Safina and then I played on Suzanne Lenglen, so...
Q. But it's a better feeling to win?
KIMIKO DATE KRUMM: Yeah, of course.
Q. (In French.) Last year you played a tournament in Saint Gaudens in France.
How come? What are the memories you would take away with you?
THE MODERATOR: The memories from last year.
KIMIKO DATE KRUMM: Yes, last year I play Saint Gaudens. I lost quarterfinal
in the singles, and then doubles was in the final.
This year I didn't go there. But, yeah, I remember the place and the very
nice place. The people is nice. And, yeah.
But of course I injured my calf in that time in the doubles final. And then I
came here and then not fix, couldn't fix, and then I retire. So not perfect,
but I have I had many good things there.
Q. Can you tell us, what did you do for the 12 years after you retired in
1996?
KIMIKO DATE KRUMM: After, when I stop 1996 until 1998, I never pick up the
racquet. I never go to the tennis court.
After two years maybe I start a little bit jogging. Sometimes maybe start
once a week. Then three times a week. Then I went to swimming. Start a little
bit exercise something. I just enjoy sports. Sometimes I play tennis. Not so
much.
2002 I break my Achilles tendon on the left side, and then after that, I
start running again.
Then 2004 I went to the London Marathon, and then I finished under 3 hours 30
minutes. And then I continued to marathon, but my husband asked to me, How
long do you want to continue to marathon? Do you want to be marathon runner
or something? (laughter.)
Then we tried to make a baby, but nothing happened. And then everybody say to
me, You should stop sports. Too much sports. You did many, many exercise. For
example, sometimes he go out the home, and then after five minutes I start to
exercise. And then he forget something, he come back to home, and, Why you
starting to already the exercise? Something like that.
So I a little bit not happy to stop sports, but we trying to make baby. So I
stop marathon, because six, almost six times a week I went to the minimum one
hour jogging every day, almost every day. So a little bit too much. So I
decide not do.
And then after 2004 and then I'm working for the TV commentary also, so I
went to the Grand Slam, most of the except Australian Open US Open, French
Open, Wimbledon. So I work for TV also, and then I have some Japanese
magazine shooting. And then also I had contract even when I stopped tennis. I
had contract with sports, Yonex and adidas, and so I work for that.
And also I work for JACO (phonetic). How can I say? JACO. It means Japan
International like a UNESCO.
Also I build school in Laos with my husband. So I work for like that. And
then, yeah. And then I just enjoy the life with my husband.
And then 2007 I start a little bit exercise for tennis. Yeah.
Q. You remember last time you won against a top 10 player?
KIMIKO DATE KRUMM: Maybe top 10 player? (Through translation.)
He told me 1996. That time, the Championships in Madison Square Garden in New
York. I beat Monica Seles in the first round. She retire. (laughter.)
And the second round I lost against Martina Hingis.
Q. Where have you found the force to beat Safina? Where have you found the
energy to beat such a player?
KIMIKO DATE KRUMM: I don't like retire, and last year here when I was here
and then I retire here, so I was very, very shock. Even when I lost, much
better feeling, my feeling.
So today during the match I many times I was thinking to better to retire or
not, because it's still many tournament coming, and then next Grand Slam
coming very soon.
Then my condition was very bad. So if I injury one my time, it's big injury.
I cannot play anymore.
But my feeling was don't want to stop. So even when I lost, I don't want to
stop. And then same time she start a little bit get nervous, and then she
start to make easy mistake. So I try many things, dropshot, and then to use
more wider, slowly, and then she start mistakes.
So I try everything, and then just to wait until she mistake. Yeah.
Q. Do you think it will be good to continue the tournament, despite your leg?
You could play again another match, maybe a long match?
KIMIKO DATE KRUMM: Yeah, I hope I don't play tomorrow, and then of course I
can recover a little bit. So of course I need to think about my body. My age
is not like 20 years old. I will be 40 this year.
So of course not very I want to go to take echo later after press conference,
and then I want to discuss with doctor. Already before the match two days ago
I went to have a look my foot, and then checked the echo. Then the doctor
said, No problem.
But still I have a problem a little bit. So then in the beginning today the
game I don't feel anything. But after get tired, and then start a little bit
I felt to pull the muscle.
So now I need to check one more time, and then I need to discuss with doctor
and my coach, also.
But I hope continue to play, yes.
