Date to play at Asian Games; Nishikori says no
Former world No. 4 Kimiko Date Krumm will compete at the Asian Games in China
in November but rising star Kei Nishikori has ruled himself out for
selection, Kyodo News learned Wednesday.
Date Krumm, who turns 40 next week, will be making her first Asian Games
appearance since winning the singles gold at the 1994 event hosted by
Hiroshima. It will also be the first time that she appears at an
international multi-sport event since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
The Japan Tennis Association will officially announce its men’s and women’s
entries for the Nov 12-27 Asian Games in Guangzhou on Friday.
One of Japan’s most successful tennis players, Date Krumm retired at the
peak of her career in 1996 but surprised the tennis world by announcing her
comeback in April 2008.
Date Krumm won her eighth career WTA singles title on the eve of her 39th
birthday at the 2009 Korea Open. She is currently ranked 51st in the world.
Nishikori, 20, has been plagued by injury in recent seasons and was forced to
retire from the third round of the U.S. Open against Spain’s Albert Montanes
with a groin problem earlier this month.
