CINCINNATI, OH, USA - Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova pulled off fairytale runs in their first two Grand Slams as a team in 2010, winning both Wimbledon and the US Open. They weren't able to keep it going in the first three Slams of 2011, but they made a major statement this past week with the US Open just around the corner, winning the Western & Southern Open. King and Shvedova, who missed the Australian Open as Shvedova was out with a knee injury then fell in the semifinals and second round of the French Open and Wimbledon, respectively, won their first title of the year in Cincinnati, their toughest match of the week coming in their last match of the week, a 64 36 119 victory over Natalie Grandin and Vladimira Uhlirova, who were in fact just two points from winning leading 8-7 in the match tie-break. "It was a weird first set - we were very up and down, and then we had the rain delay and it was still up and down," King said. "I thought they played more solid today but we were able to win it in the end. Anything can happen in a super tie-break - a mis-hit here or there and losing a point on your serve, and you can be down four or five points. We're happy we managed to close it out." "They were playing more aggressively in the second set, but we kept doing the same things and maybe they lost a little concentration after they won that set," Shvedova said. "This was our first week playing together since Wimbledon." King now has 13 WTA doubles titles to her name, Shvedova five. This was their third together after the two aforementioned Grand Slams from last year. "We were talking about it before, this is our first time winning a tournament outside of a Grand Slam!" King added. "We have fun every time we play. We feel we've already proven ourselves, so we just go out there and try our best." Grandin and Uhlirova were playing their fifth WTA doubles final together, and though they are now 0-5 in those, it was still a very big week for them, this being by far their biggest final together. Unseeded, they upset No.7 seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, No.4 seeds Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova and No.1 seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik en route - Hlavackova and Hradecka are the reigning French Open champions, while Peschke and Srebotnik are the reigning Wimbledon champions and co-No.1s. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 58.114.221.7
