Lance Berkman was named National League Player of the Month for May.
Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday.
Berkman batted .387 (36-for-93) with 10 doubles, nine homers and 24 RBIs last
month. He scored 20 runs and compiled a .521 on-base percentage, as well as a
.785 slugging percentage.
Entering Wednesday's game, Berkman reached base in 32 consecutive games, the
longest streak in a single season for a Houston player since Jeff Bagwell
reached in 33 consecutive games from June 25-July 31, 1999.
Berkman homered in nine of his last 14 games and was hitting .429 (24-for-56)
with nine homers and 17 RBIs in 14 games since May 16 entering the series
finale in Chicago.
Only in his fourth full season in the big leagues, the left fielder ranks sixth
on the franchise career list with 140 homers.
Berkman is the first Astros position player to win the Player of the Month
honor since Bagwell in July 2001 and the 14th all-time. Roger Clemens is the
last Astro to win a monthly award, as he earned NL Pitcher of the Month honors
in April.
