Astros reach agreements with three
HOUSTON -- Third baseman Morgan Ensberg, shortstop Adam
Everett and outfielder Jason Lane agreed Thursday to one-year
contracts with the Houston Astros, settling the team's remaining
arbitration cases.
Ensberg will get $4.35 million, Everett $2.8 million and Lane
$1.05 million.
Ensberg hit .235 with 23 homers and 58 RBIs in 127 games last
year. The 31-year-old, who made $3.8 million last year, was asking
for $4.9 million and was offered $4 million.
Since 2005, Ensberg ranks second to Aramis Ramirez of the
Chicago Cubs among NL third basemen with 59 home runs. He was an
All-Star two years ago after setting franchise records for a third
baseman with 36 homers and 101 RBIs.
Everett hit .239 with six homers and a career-high 59 RBIs last
year. He committed only seven errors.
The 29-year-old, who made $1.9 million, can earn an additional
$150,000 in performance bonuses: $50,000 each for 575, 600 and 625
plate appearances.
Lane hit .201 with 15 homers and 45 RBIs last season, when he
was demoted for part of the year to Triple-A Round Rock. The
30-year-old, who made $450,000 last year, could earn $100,000 in
performance bonuses: $50,000 each for 400 and 500 plate
appearances.
