HOUSTON -- On an afternoon in which he recorded no strikeouts and got
behind early, Chris Sampson ended up dealing one of his best career starts.

The second-year right-hander threw a career-best eight innings, recovering
from early trouble and limiting the Cardinals to three runs in an 8-3 Astros
victory on Saturday afternoon. The win is Houston's second in three games
after a 10-game losing streak.

the game."

After surrendering a second-inning solo home run to Jim Edmonds and
sacrifice flies to Aaron Miles and Gary Bennett, Sampson buckled down
and retired 13 consecutive Cardinals from the top of the fourth until
a two-out single from Scott Spiezio in the eighth. More impressively,
Albert Pujols was retired in all four of his at-bats and never had a
ball leave the infield.

thrower, but he has a lot of movement and it's always down in the zone, so
you have to take your chances with a guy like that."

Lidge pitched a perfect ninth, with two strikeouts, to secure the win,
bringing his ERA down to a season-best 2.70. In his last 19 outings, he
boasts an impressive 0.89 ERA, with just 12 hits allowed and 30 strikeouts.

But unlike many starts from Houston pitchers in recent weeks, Sampson's
gem was coupled with quality run support from the Houston offense.
Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, Eric Munson and Adam
Everett led off the inning with back-to-back singles against St. Louis
starter Kip Wells, and Sampson reached on an error to load the bases
with no one out.

Two batters later, Hunter Pence fisted an inside fastball down the
right-field line and it dropped in for a double, scoring Everett and
Sampson and putting the Astros in front for good at 4-3.

From there, the Astros offense poured it on. Berkman drove in Craig
Biggio with a groundout, and Luke Scott and Carlos Lee added home runs
in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Perhaps most crucial to the Astros' nine-hit, eight-run outburst was

and in the eight-hole, Everett had a team-high three hits, including a
second-inning home run that tied the game, 2-2.

double-digit losses, dropping to 2-10 on the season with a 6.40 ERA.
He gave up six runs, five earned, in five innings, allowing seven hits
and three walks.
