49.Pinder went undrafted out of high school, but there's no danger of that
happening this time around. The Virginia Tech third baseman has gotten bigger
and stronger during his college career. He uses the whole field at the plate
with an advanced approach. While he has mostly gap power now, he has the chance
to clear some fences in the future. He has fringy speed, but he's a solid and
reliable defender at third and should have no trouble staying there. It isn't a
great class in terms of college bats, so Pinder's performance will be watched
very carefully all spring and he's bound to do pretty well on Draft day.

53. CHAD PINDER, 3b/ss, Virginia Tech (Jr.)
In a draft class full of high risk college players, Pinder makes a compelling
case in the early rounds as a safe bet. The 6-foot-2, 192 pound infielder has
been a consistent performer for Virginia Tech for three years now, and placed
himself on the map as an elite draft pick last summer in Cape Cod. A third
baseman with excellent hands and range, Pinder may profile better up the
middle, specifically at second base, as a pro. He’s more of an average hitter
than a player who is going to put up big power numbers, and he certainly has
the skill set to play up the middle. His swing is short and quick to the ball,
and he’s proven he can recognize and handle quality breaking pitches. He’s
also shown scouts an excellent batting eye and a decent rate of contact. He’s
a step above average speed-wise as well. That well rounded skill-set, plus
another high quality spring in 2013, should keep Pinder inside the top two
rounds in June.

71. Chad Pinder, 3B, 6'2'', 192 lb, Virginia Tech
Pinder projects as a fringy to solid-average regular at third base, the type of
player who'd go in the fourth or fifth round in a stronger draft but could go
as high as the late second this year. At the plate, his approach is quiet, with
his hands starting somewhat low and minimal load before a slightly rotational
swing that might produce 10-to-15 home run power at most. His bat speed is a
tick better than average, but it's more of a strength swing than anything else.
He turns his front knee in for his trigger, so he's late transferring his
weight and his front side can go soft as he follows through. He should stay at
third base with the hands and arm to make up for any lack of range at the
position.
I don't see star potential here, but there are so few bats in this draft who
might be average big-league regulars, especially in the infield, that he's a
clear top 100 prospect even with the lack of ceiling.
