我.......>__< 我不認識他,他也不認識我!:PPP 06/18/03 JIM BESEDA Working in several professional sports the past 20 years, Steve Patterson has built a reputation as an effective executive with, first and foremost, a passion for basketball. So when he is named president of the Trail Blazers today, it will represent a return to his favorite sport. Patterson, a former general manager of the Houston Rockets, will leave his job as a senior vice president and chief development officer with the NFL's Houston Texans to join the Blazers. A Blazers spokesman would confirm only that a news conference was set for 11:30 a.m. today at the Rose Garden. Patterson, 45, replaces Bob Whitsitt, who is leaving the Blazers on June 30 after holding the titles of president and general manager for nine years. Bert Kolde, the Blazers vice chairman in charge of the search committee, declined to comment on his progress in filling the vacancies. A spokesman for Kolde said the organization is on pace to hire a general manager by July 1. Portland selected Patterson off a shortlist that included Blazers executive vice president Erin Hubert, local radio executive Tim McNamara and Tod Leiweke, president of the NHL's Minnesota Wild. "If Steve Patterson ends up being the guy there, it's an awesome choice, and Portland will be a better place for it," Leiweke said Tuesday. "I've known him for years, and I know him as a capable basketball man. It's in his blood." Patterson is the son of longtime NBA executive Ray Patterson, and he isn't to be confused with the former UCLA and NBA center of the same name. He spent nine seasons with the Rockets, including a stint as general manager from 1989-93. He worked closely with coach Rudy Tomjanovich in putting together the team that won consecutive NBA championships in 1994 and 1995. "I really enjoyed working with Steve," Tomjanovich said Tuesday. "We were both young guys at our jobs at the time, and we had a real close connection. I thought that together we helped bring those championships to the Rockets. He is a hard-working guy, someone who was really easy to work with." McNamara, vice president and general manager of Rose City Radio, the Allen- owned company that operates KXJM and KXL, said he doesn't know Patterson but is encouraged by what he has heard. "I'm a Blazer fan, No. 1," McNamara said. "I want to see this all go in a positive direction, and that's one of the reasons that I went after it as hard as I did. I respect their decision, because they did go through a long process for this." After working for the Rockets, Patterson spent 31/2 years as president and general manager of the International Hockey League's Houston Aeros. In 1997, he joined Houston businessman Bob McNair and helped lead the efforts to build Reliant Stadium and bring an NFL expansion team to Houston. Leroy Shafer, assistant general manager for marketing and presentation for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, worked with Patterson and McNair. "I can't tell you how much I hate what we are losing and what you guys are getting," Shafer said. "Steve is committed to community, and that is one of the things that Portland is going to gain." Shafer said Patterson knows his way around a sports franchise, which probably was what helped sell the Blazers on him. "Steve is one of the most savvy marketing people I have ever met," Shafer said. "He understands what corporate wants, he understands what ticket holders want, and he understands what the athlete and owners want. He has a tremendous ability to balance all three, to make it a win-win for everyone involved." Jason Quick of The Oregonian contributed to this report.
