Nate's sense of Sergio Posted by Casey Holdahl February 23, 2007 11:37AM Interesting story from Kerry Eggers today about Sergio Rodriguez and the varying opinions the decision makers in the Trail Blazer organizational have of his game. The reactions from Nate McMillan, Kevin Pritchard and even Zach Randolph are, I feel, and indicator of where this team is going in the future. "Speed is definitely the way most teams are going," McMillan says. "The rules against hand-checking have forced teams to go after fast, versatile and athletic players who can create off the dribble and get to the basket. The game has gotten faster, especially in the West. Speed is in." McMillan says he likes both styles. "I prefer to push the ball, but be able to run a half-court offense," he says. "If you can do both, it definitely gives you an advantage. "We change tempo (going from Jack to Rodriguez). I don't know how effective Sergio would be, slowing him down and becoming a half-court player. His style goes with LaMarcus (Aldridge), Travis (Outlaw) and Martell (Webster), guys who get up and down the floor. But can he play that way with Zach? That was part of the problem with Sebastian (Telfair) and Zach. Zach is more effective in a half-court game." Randolph isn't so sure. He respects Jack and has no issue with him as the starter, "but I love Sergio's game, his style of play," Randolph says. "He reminds me of Steve Nash. He knows how to get the ball to people. I like to run, and he gets us going. He's got a lot to learn, but he's a good young player." ... "Sergio was this huge X factor for me," says Kevin Pritchard, director of player personnel. "When he was 17, I saw him miss a shot for a game-winner in a top-level pro game (in Spain), and I thought he was fearless. Nate's a tough, get-in-your face coach. He'll tell Sergio, 'You can't make that pass,' and I'll see Sergio get a look like, 'Don't tell me I can't do it.' I like that little confidence he has. "Everybody on the team loves playing with Sergio. I think we caught lightning in the bottle, and we got lucky with it. We have no idea how good this kid can be. I'm not sure what the ceiling is. Could he turn into a guy who affects the game at a high level? I have no doubt.
