The Blazer worth three or four wins this season Posted by Jason Quick September 28, 2007 09:47AM Spent an hour with Nate McMillan in his office Friday, and the coach had some eyebrow-raising comments, but none of them stunned me more than this: "I think Taurean Green is going to win us three or four games for us this year,'' McMillan said. "I do.'' After I picked my jaw up off McMillan's desk, and asked him to repeat what he just said, the coach remained straight faced and insistent on his prediction. "Hey, he can shoot, man,'' McMillan said. I told him that I think the rookie point guard from Florida showed some guts and savvy during the summer league, but before I could say anything else, McMillan cut me off. "You're damn right he does,'' McMillan said, referring to the guts and savvy comment. "He's small, but you don't win back-to-back (NCAA) championships as the starting point guard unless you can play. You put him on the floor at the end of the game with Brandon (Roy) because he can shoot the three. Right now, I would say he is the best three-point shooter among the guards. He handles the ball, runs the pick and roll, gets up on his man ... I like him.'' If Green emerges as McMillan foresees, it will create even more of a logjam at point guard, where the Blazers already have Jarrett Jack, Steve Blake and Sergio Rodriguez. And that led to another surprising comment from McMillan. Early in our conversation, McMillan talked about wanting to use a 9-man playing rotation this season. That led me to ask about Rodriguez, a player who fans, and general manager Kevin Pritchard, love. "He's out (of the rotation),'' McMillan said of Rodriguez. "Right now, he is. He's going to have to play his way in, and that's going to be hard to do unless Blake or Jack just dog it, which I don't think will happen.'' It became apparent last season, and during summer league, that McMillan has no patience for Rodriguez's penchant for turnovers and defensive breakdowns on the perimeter. Still, McMillan said he is not down on Sergio. "Eventually, we are going to have to make a decision with one of our guards,'' McMillan said. "There has been a lot of interest in Jack, Sergio and Green. People have been calling. That's why when Kevin and I talked, we agreed that we are young as heck and lacking experience, but we decided that we weren't going to mess with this team. I know we have four point guards, and we like them all, so let's keep them.'' If you think the Blazers point guard situation is crowed now, keep in mind that the Blazers have Petteri Koponen--a 6-foot-4 point guard drafted this summer who McMillan is high on--playing overseas, as well as Rudy Fernandez - a skilled shooting guard - waiting to come over from Europe next season. I still think the master plan is to bring Fernandez over next season, and after a year of seasoning, Fernandez becomes the starting shooting guard and Brandon Roy moves to point guard. McMillan smiled at that theory, and didn't discount it, but he said we were getting ahead of ourselves. "In a year or two we bring Rudy over, we have a big guard in Koponen ... we have a lot of options,'' McMillan said.
