原文:http://0rz.tw/135el The McMillan threat: Who was the coach talking about? At Friday's practice, Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan told his team that their play had deteriorated to the point where changes to the playing rotation could be in order. McMillan was short and stern after that practice, and in little mood to elaborate on his mindset. But this morning, after the team's shootaround for tonight's game against Toronto, the coach was as vibrant and upbeat as I have seen him in the past two weeks. It was almost as if his threat to the team had lifted a weight off his shoulders. I think he is genuinely excited for tonight, to see how the team responds. Over the years of covering McMillan's teams, there are certain practices, and conversations that stick out. Looking back, they seem to be at defining moments of the season. Last year, for instance, I remember our conversation about the practice in San Antonio, which kick-started the 13-game winning streak. You remember the practice - Steve Blake threw a chair (twice) and Martell Webster and Joel Przybilla nearly came to blows. I also remember the shootaround before the Sacramento game last season when he gathered the team and told them that he was stepping back as a coach, that they had grown up enough that they didn't need him standing and yelling instructions all the time. Today felt like another one of those defining moments. I'll walk you through the highlights ... First off, after the shootaround, McMillan escorted Greg Oden into his office for a meeting that lasted about 30 minutes. McMillan said he called the meeting on the heels of John Canzano's column in Saturday's editions of The Oregonian that said Joel Przybilla has earned the starting center job more than Oden. McMillan's message to Oden was the same one he has been telling the rookie center all season: Start having fun. When McMillan came out of his office, I went straight to the point. Is it time for Jerryd Bayless, I asked. McMillan smiled, giving me the sense that he read what I wrote last night. "I made the comment for us as a team: I'm looking at change,'' McMillan said. "If I don't see the change we need ... OK we've done some good things, but we are starting to make the same mistakes. We are not seeing our guys take the next step at certain spots. So, that's everybody. We need to take that next step. Defending better. Rebounding better. Attacking better. Not turning the ball over. "So, yes, I'm looking at Sergio. Yes, I'm looking at Ike (Diogu). Yes, I'm looking at the small forward position. I'm looking at all of our guys, and there are guys who want opportunities. So is it time for Bayless? I'm certainly looking at what we are doing the last couple of games, and if it continues maybe another game or so, we make that move. "My thing is I don't want to make that move (pause) I'm not flip-flopping,'' McMillan said. "That guy is going to get the same opportunity as the other guy. You don't rush it and you don't flip-flop it and play with guys' minds. We are already playing a lot of guys, and to play you one game ... that I don't want to do.'' In other words, McMillan didn't want to create the environment tonight where guys were playing tight, or looking over their shoulders. But he also wanted to make it clear that defense will be valued even more than it has in the past. "We were a decent, or OK defense team,'' McMillan said. "Now, we are worse. That can't happen. So I let them know that this is a problem. I thought our last game (against Dallas) was just bad. Really bad. Even though that's a good team, it was still bad. So this is where we are: We've had a rotation, but we are going to get guys in and give another guy a shot.'' I then asked, 'Who exactly are you talking about?' "It could be Bayless. It could be Diogu. It could be bringing Joel back in (as a starter). It could be Travis or Rudy at the three,'' McMillan said. "It's just ... it's ... it's a sense of urgency. LaMarcus ... it could be all of our guys. Brandon ... in the sense of we are playing you too many minutes. Don't tempo yourself, thinking in your mind that you have to bring it tonight again, so you don't give it on the defensive end.'' 可能是我們全員,我們讓Brandon打 太久了,........」(很亂的一段,不翻了) By the way, that might have been the first time McMillan has ever pointed out a flaw of Roy ... noting that Roy has been exerting so much energy on the offensive end that his defense of late has suffered. I will like to see how Roy responds to that. Also, I will like to see how Roy responds to this: In order to preserve Roy for the entire season, McMillan said he will start reducing Roy's minutes. Roy is averaging a team-high 37.1 minutes a game, which included 42:25 against Dallas on Thursday. And more and more, McMillan has started the fourth quarter with Roy on the floor, when earlier in the season Roy would always start the quarter on the bench and enter around the 8 or 9 minute mark. "My thing will be to rotate him and get him out, and go with our second unit, regardless of what the score is,'' McMillan said. "And that's hard at times. But we have to have the rest of the team have an opportunity to play. I have to see what I've got there. "There have been times when the game is close in the fourth, and I have stayed with Brandon - that's because that tempo, that momentum was with us and it was a three-point game one way or the other. Now, that's not to say I won't still do that, but the rest of our guys have potential, and I've got to see it and go with that.'' This is where things get tricky. McMillan has said this before about Roy and his minutes, only to keep playing Roy close to 40 minutes. And I totally understand why. At 11 a.m., in a quiet gym at the practice facility, it's easy to say you are going to start resting Roy. But tonight, around 9 p.m., in a hot and raucous Rose Garden, when the Blazers have let an 11-point lead dwindle to four, it's awfully difficult to pull Roy. But this time, McMillan seems committed to it. He said he'd like to get Roy closer to 35 minutes a game. "What ends up happening is we may burn a game or two doing it,'' McMillan conceded. "You are trying to win games, but in doing that, you bury Brandon. So it may work now, but in February and March - when you really need him - he's worn down.'' I then steered the conversation back to the original topic: Tonight's game against Toronto and how he will utilize his rotation. Was it safe, I asked, to assume he would coach tonight's game with a shorter leash, meaning he will pull guys quicker for mistakes? "It's not so much a shorter leash,'' McMillan said. "I'm going to coach the game according to what is going on. Yes, I will go with the same rotation, but we will make adjustments on what is going on, as I have been doing. The thing is, you have to get it done: We have to defend, rebound and execute.'' I followed with: Can I say you are more apt to use Bayless or Diogu tonight? "Oh yeah,'' McMillan said. "But I think the rotation now is pretty much the same. I don't want to just throw them in there for the sake of sending a message. If we need what I think they can bring, then I will put them in there. But when I am talking about making a change - I'm talking about in practice, as far as who has on the jerseys. And who is going through the walk through. We are going that way and everybody knows we are going that way.'' Do we see Bayless? Diogu? A resurgent defense, led by Sergio Rodriguez? (By the way, Rodriguez had an extended meeting with McMillan yesterday). Tonight has suddenly become more interesting. Diogu? The shot in the arm Brandon Roy talked about on Friday might have been injected. Or maybe this team is more of a defensive mess than anyone imagined. Can't wait to find out some answers ...
