For the Portland Trail Blazers the 2008-09 has to be considered a success, but perhaps not in a way many would expect. The team made its first appearance in the NBA Playoffs in six seasons, earning homecourt advantage in the first round after a 54-28 record placed them fourth in the Western Conference. The team – players, coaches, and front office – was all legitimately pleased about the 13-game improvement from the previous season, but they also know this is just a step in big plan. What Went Wrong? To be honest, not a whole lot. Portland's biggest issues this season were in the area of consistency, from all sorts of places. They would like to get the point guard position to be more reliable, so they know what to expect when they turn to the reserves. Right now Steve Blake, the incumbent starter, is probably better suited to a reserve role on a top team. The problem was that Sergio Rodriguez and Jerryd Bayless both failed to really take control of the reserve spot by producing, even when Blake was injured. It's a little unfair to call it something going wrong, but the progress of Greg Oden being stilted by the midseason bone chip in his knee hurt both him and the team. Oden missed 15 games with that injury and it came right at a time when he had begun to show how dominant he could become. After his return from the injury he looked a little gun shy and began finding himself in immediate foul trouble every time he stepped on the court. However, anyone thinking Portland is starting to think twice about choosing Oden over Kevin Durant in the 2007 NBA Draft is wrong. Oden still shows too much promise and the organization is 100% united in giving Oden everything he needs to become successful. The lost season for Martell Webster was also a disappointment. Webster fractured his foot in a pre-season game, was out until January, then came back and fractured the same foot in his first game back. It was expected Webster's outside game would be a perfect complement to the inside games of Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge along with the slashing and direction of Brandon Roy, but to find out if that is really true Portland has to wait until next fall. What Went Right? A lot of things went right. Team MVP Brandon Roy proved his selection to the 2008 NBA All-Star Game was not a fluke was named by the coaches again in 2009, and then capped the season off with being named to the All-NBA Second Team. Power forward LaMarcus Aldridge was once again the second-best player on the team and while he still has plenty of room for growth the 18.1 point and 7.5 rebounds he averaged in 2008-09 are nothing to sneeze at. The most impressive year, though, absolutely belonged to center Joel Przybilla. In his ninth season in the league Przybilla played all 82 games for the first time, leading the team in rebounds and blocked shots. With Oden missing stretches of games twice, both times Przybilla stepped up and filled the starting spot. The second time, in the midst of a run to the playoffs, he was so impressive Coach Nate McMillan kept him the starter for the rest of the season; though don't expect that to continue next fall if both centers are healthy. Portland's rookie class was nothing short of amazing. While Oden started and came off the bench between injury stints, French forward Nicolas Batum started 75 of the 79 games he played this past year. Often Batum was matched up with the other team's best wing scorer and because of his ability to play fantastic defense, to keep his man in front of him, the Blazers believed he was capable of the assignment. He also showed the ability to hit three-point shots, though offensive consistency wasn't quite there. Besides Oden and Batum, there was Spanish guard Rudy Fernandez, a very experienced import who never once showed the jitters of being a rookie – mostly because he's really not. Fernandez set the rookie record for three-pointers made in a season and became a fan favorite at Portland's Rose Garden. Last but not least was point guard Jerryd Bayless. Bayless didn't play much by virtue of being the third point guard (12.4 minutes in 53 games), but he showed flashes of what made him the MVP of the 2008 Vegas Summer League and why many believe he is Portland's point guard of the future. Coach Nate McMillan had a very good season. He was able to integrate three rookies into the rotation of a top-four team in the Western Conference, he was able to make the hard decisions when it came to the center position, and he learned the proper amount of trust and control to exert over team leaders Roy and Aldridge. Where Do The Blazers Go From Here? The first issue to solidify the point guard position. If Bayless is the point guard of the future he needs to get more burn in 2009-10, and that means likely trading Sergio Rodriguez. For a third point guard look for the Blazers to sign a veteran, perhaps someone in the Lindsay Hunter/Anthony Johnson mold. Signing a big-name free agent point guard like Jason Kidd or Andre Miller would be a surprise, but they do need some veterans. Portland also needs a player behind LaMarcus Aldridge who can rebound and score off the bench. They will be playing most likely alongside Przybilla, so the Blazers would need post scoring in the second unit – which is something Channing Frye couldn't do last season. Look for Portland to bring in a veteran point guard and power forward, and then draft another center or two and perhaps a bigger shooting guard in the second round. A lot of early mock drafts have Portland linked to Omar Casspi in the first round, a power forward from Israel. Its possible Portland could draft a player like Casspi to stay in Europe for another year; they also have Finnish point guard Petteri Koponen and English big man Joel Freeland as former first round picks they could decide to bring stateside. Or, any of these assets could be used as trade bait at draft time. Portland also has four second round picks they can use to facilitate a deal. There are a few players who will not be safe from trade rumors, most notably Rodriguez and probably Travis Outlaw. Both can make solid contributions, but may not be the just-right fit for Portland. They are both cheap and could he used to help facilitate a move for that needed veteran. Or the Blazers could simply divide up their $7-8 million in cap space for the veterans they need. Lastly, the Blazers will have the option to offer early extensions this summer to their first round picks from the 2006 NBA Draft: Roy, Aldridge, and Rodriguez. While extending Rodriguez would be shocking, expect the Blazers to come to terms with Roy and Aldridge, thus avoiding restricted free agency for both players in 2010. It's almost a given Roy will be offered a max deal and Aldridge may as well. The future of the franchise is very bright and after a season that can be called nothing but successful, now it's time for the Portland Trail Blazers to make those little tweaks here and there to become bona fide championship contenders. 未來是光明的,下一站目標應該就是把球隊提升到總冠軍的競爭者上 http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=12691 -- Greg Oden LaMarcus Aldridge Martell Webster Brandon Roy Jerryd Bayless ║ ████████████████████████████████████ ★ 「RISE WITH USLet's back to RIP CITY!「GO BLAZERS!」 ████████████████████████████████████ ║ ╚ Joel Przybilla Travis Outlaw Nicolas Batum Rudy Fernandez Steve Blake -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 221.169.172.177
