Dante Cunningham to miss Blazers' summer league game tonight
Dante Cunningham, the Trail Blazers' second round draft pick who has enjoyed
a breakout summer league, will not play tonight because of a left groin injury.
Cunningham appeared to injure himself during the Blazers' loss to the Houston
Rockets on Wednesday night. In the first quarter of the game, he rode an
exercise bike next to the team bench for long stretches while strength and
conditioning coach Bobby Medina talked to him, presumably about his groin.
At one point I saw Medina mouth the words, "You all right?" Cunningham
responded simply: "Yeah."
Cunningham returned to the game and did not show any rust as he finished with
a game-high 22 points, five rebounds and two steals in a little more than 33
minutes. His left thigh was taped and he walked a little gingerly after the
game, but said he was fine.
Cunningham did not participate in shootaround this morning and is listed
day-to-day for the rest of summer league.
I missed coach Joe Prunty at shootaround because I was interviewing other
players, but I've left a phone message seeking more detail. When he gets back
to me, I'll update this post.
Through two summer league games, Cunningham, a 6-foot-8 forward from Villanova,
is averaging 21.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and leads the Blazers in
scoring.
