Gomes, along with rookie Luke Babbitt (16th pick overall), was acquired in a draft-day trade with Minnesota for Martell Webster. The last three seasons of Gomes' contract were partially guaranteed. The move will save the Blazers, who earned a trade exception worth just under $500,000, roughly $8 million. As Mike Barrett wrote yesterday: If he's waived, the guranteed money (spread out over the three years) does count toward team salary (by designated season), but does not count as a roster player moving forward. Waiving him wouldn't give the team any cap room, because other salaries already exceed the cap. But, this would take the team below the luxury tax threshold.
