"I played good, but the opponent was Dallas, and I was going to have to play that style for us to be successful," he says. He will make $14.6 million next season and $15.75 million in 2004-05. Those are franchise player-type dollars, not those normally paid to a middle-aged, undersized guard who sat a good portion of last season. They aren't untradable numbers, but they make it difficult unless Stoudamire accepts a Shawn Kemp-like buyout, which is unlikely. I can speak for a couple of guys in saying the only thing guys were a little mad about was, we want a relationship with these guys. You don't have to be the best of friends and go out to dinner, but you at least want to be on a speaking basis. If you have a problem, why can't you pick up the phone and call Bob Whitsitt? Why should you have to go through another person?" On Maurice Cheeks: "Portland should have at least given Maurice a chance to interview for the job in Philadelphia. Whether or not he would take the job, with everything that went down with our team the last two years and with his ties to Philadelphia, you owed it to Maurice to let him at least see what's there. And if he did take the job, you would have to give the blessings and move on. As a coach, Maurice will never know what he would have done. He might not admit it, but I know a part of him is a little hurt.
