deal not dead yet

August 12, 2003 -- News that Arvydas Sabonis told the Trail
Blazers that he intends to return to Lithuania and not play
in the NBA this upcoming season caused murmurs yesterday that
discussions of the Nets-Blazers deal involving Kenyon Martin
and Rasheed Wallace might not be completely dead.
The Blazers have until Friday to guarantee Sabonis' $7 million
contract. A team acquiring the contract before then could turn
around and quickly cut it off the salary cap. One proposed
scenario had the Nets packaging Martin and Dikembe Mutombo
(with a suffocating $37 million over two years on his deal) for
Sabonis and Wallace (one year at $17 mil). The Blazers are
against Mutombo's contract - but without Sabonis, they have no
center. And there is heavy pressure on the club to clean up the
team's image.
Officials for both teams have said they will not discuss trade
rumors. Martin, upset at not receiving a maximum contract offer
at the start of the month, asked the Nets for a trade.
