Blazers Chat with John Nash
August 14, 2003
Blazers general manager John Nash joined us on Thursday, August 14 to talk
about the state of the Blazers. Will Damon be back? What about Rasheed? Has
Ruben Patterson requested a trade? Listen to Nash's takes below:
1 - What's the latest on Arvydas Sabonis?
Nash's take: "(Thursday), we terminated the contract of Arvydas Sabonis..."
2 - What are your main goals right now? Will the team's image be improved?
Nash's take: "1) to improve the image of the team, 2) was to continue to win
games...and finally, we were going to make an effort to get our payroll under
control."
3 - Is any player on the roster untouchable?
Nash's take: "No, I don't think you'd ever say that...I think Zach Randolph
is one of our young guys that we would be very, very reluctant to part with..."
4 - Can the Blazers be competitive in the Western Conference with the current
roster?
Nash's take: "Because (Zach Randolph and Qyntel Woods) will get more of an
opportunity, we should be able to continue to compete."
5 - Have you talked to any of the players since you took over as general
manager?
Nash's take: "I have met and talked with most of the players, some of them
have been here in person. Derek Anderson came in about a week ago, Ruben
Patterson was in here earlier this week...They're getting ready, and I think
vacation's over."
6 - What is your relationship with Rasheed Wallace like?
Nash's take: "I'd say it's professional."
7 - Have you spoken with Rasheed?
Nash's take: "I have not spoken to Rasheed. We've missed each other a couple
of times."
8 - What's your view on Wallace refusing a child's request for an autograph?
Nash's take: "Obviously, you like for your players to give autographs...I
didn't see the incident that was reported in the paper. I don't know exactly
what happened."
9 - Do you feel pressure to trade Rasheed?
Nash's take: "My job is not necessarily to satisfy the community that doesn't
like Rasheed, my job is to do the best I can for the Portland Trail Blazers."
10 - Without commenting directly on trade rumors, does a player like Pau Gasol
represent equal value for Rasheed Wallace?
Nash's take: "Yeah, because of (Gasol's) potential. He is a marvelous player."
11 - Is the rumored Nets/Blazers trade dead?
Nash's take: "We continue to talk to any and every team that has interest in
talking to us in the league. I'm hopeful that we have a couple of irons in
the fire that might materialize."
12 - Can you put a timeframe on when you might make a deal?
Nash's take: "I would have expected by now to accomplish something. I'm a
little disappointed that we haven't been able to."
13 - Can Zach and Ruben co-exist?
Nash's take: "I recognize they have a history, but they may have no choice."
