3-0: BVB made to work hard to reach second round of DFB Cup
[3.08.] Borussia Dortmund are through to the second round of the German Cup,
but the Super Cup champions had to work hard to beat SV Wilhelmshaven 3-0
(0-0) on Saturday, with late goals from Grosskreutz, Ducksch and Lewandowski
securing victory. Their opponents deserve credit for a good tactical display,
even if they spent all of the game trying not to concede rather than score.
Boris Rupert reporting from Wilhelmshaven
In hot and humid temperatures, more than 7,500 fans packed into Wilhelmshaven
′s Jadestadion. They saw a one-sided affair in which Borussia Dortmund,
despite dominating the game (81 percent possession; 19-2 shots on goal) from
start to finish, were made to work very hard for their win.
The Scenario:
In was only the fifth time SV Wilhelmshaven progressed to the first round of
the DFB Cup. They had lost all of three previous home games in this
competition (against Kaiserslautern, Frankfurt, Augsburg) with their only
goal coming from a 4-1 defeat at Bochum in 1980. For BVB, this game marked
their 51st first-round DFB Cup appearance.
Personnel Matters:
BVB had to do without Sokratis who was serving a suspension he picked up
while playing for SV Werder Bremen last season (red card for two yellow cards
against Münster). Also not available for selection were Piszczek (rehab
after hip surgery) and Mkhitaryan (ankle injury), while Blaszczykowski
(virus) and Bender (groin) rejoined the squad, but started on the bench. Just
like Weidenfeller (back problems) who was replaced in goal by Langerak - not
least because to pick up match practice as Weidenfeller will be suspended for
the Bundesliga opener at Augsburg next week Saturday.
Tactics:
BVB set up in their usual 4-2-3-1, but often switched to a 3-5-2 with two
wide full-backs and one of their two holding midfielders moving to the centre
to create superiority in midfield. Wilhelmshaven played a very defensive
4-2-3-1, with two defensive lines trying to stifle BVB and only Tietz
supporting lone striker Loheider up front.
The Game & Analysis:
BVB enjoyed 81 percent possession, created five chances and didn′t give the
hosts a single chance in the first half. They were neat and precise in their
build up play (passing accuracy of 89 percent), but failed to inject some
pace into their attacks and turn one of their (few) chances into a goal.
For most of the game, all 20 outfield players met in that pocket of space
between the centre circle and the penalty area line, with Wilhelmshaven doing
very well in disrupting Borussia′s rhythm and slowing down the pace of the
game.
But there were still chances for BVB. After 15 minutes, Aubameyang was put
through clear on goal by Reus, but could not get the ball past Siegl. And it
was not to be the last fine save by the Wilhelmshaven goalkeeper in this
game. He also did well to keep out a Sahin free-kick from 20 yards on 38
minutes and a well-placed header from Aubameyang on 44 minutes,
while Subotic had the last chance before the half-time whistle when his
header from a Sahin free-kick went just wide.
It was almost the same story in the second half with BVB fully in control of
the game, but unable to convert their dominance into goals. As the game
reached the hour mark, Ducksch was brought on by Jürgen Klopp for Kehl to
play in the No. 10 role, with Gündogan dropping back into the holding
position alongside Sahin to build the game from the back.
It almost paid off immediately, with BVB creating a number of chances within
the space of a few minutes. While Reus drew another fine save from Siegl from
a free-kick, Lewandowski had a header just over the bar from a cross from
Aubameyang who came close with a header himself a minute later only to be
denied by the magnificent Siegl (66 mins). At the other end, BVB′s only
defensive error of the game allowed Scheffler to run through clear on goal,
but Langerak made himself big and saved the ball with his chest (67 mins.).
In the 71st minute, BVB finally managed to break the deadlock when Ducksch
sent a cross into the centre and the clearance from Hyde fell straight to the
feet of Grosskreutz to smash home from 16 yards. Aubameyang could have made
it 2-0 four minutes later but was again denied by Siegl. It was up to BVB′s
young second-half substitutes to put the game out of Wilhelmshaven′s reach.
Hofmann waltzed his way into the area before slipping the ball back for
Ducksch to slot home from close range (83 mins.). Lewandowski sealed the win
in the final minute of the game after good work from Hofmann.
