4-0 : Aubameyang ensures
BVB enjoy the perfect start
Borussia started the 51st Bundesliga season with a resounding
away win. Courtesy of a hat-trick from newcomer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang BVB
triumphed 4-0 (1-0) in Augsburg. For long stretches of an exciting and good
game Augsburg more than held their own but Dortmund were so much better in
front of goal. Lewandowski rounded off the scoring from the spot late on.
Boris Rupert reports from Augsburg
36,600 gathered in the sold out SGL-Arena witnessed a game which from the
start showed both teams going for goal. BVB eventually took the lead on 23
minutes when Aubameyang stooped low to fire in a header but were then made to
endure some scares in front of their own goal. In fairness, Augsburg were
close to equalising during this phase, however, Aubameyang duly notched his
second and third goals on 66 and 79 minutes respectively . He thus became the
first Dortmunder to score a hat-trick on his Bundesliga debut ; previously
Timo Konietzka (1963) and Marcio Amoroso (2001) had managed a couple on
debut. With just four minutes left Robert Lewandowski slotted home a penalty
to finish the scoring.
The Scenario:
Augsburg, the seventh best team in the second half of last season, hosted the
runners up in both the league and the Champions League. Augsburg saw
themselves as live outsiders although they had never won this fixture (one
draw, three defeats). BVB came into the game having lost just two of their
last 31 Bundesliga games as well as having established a new club record high
in goals scored on the road...41! The last game between the clubs had
finished in a 3-1 win for BVB.
Personnel Matters:
BVB were without the services of Weidenfeller (suspended), Piszczek (hip
operation) and Mkhitaryan (resuming full training on Tuesday) and made just
the one change from the side that had won in the Cup last weekend with Bender
replacing Kehl. The hosts had to make do without their ′keeper Manninger, de
Jong, Ottl and Bancé.
Tactics:
Whenever BVB had the ball, Augsburg quickly had nine men behind the ball
hoping to counter-attack from a deep lying 4-1-4-1 formation with Hahn, wide
left, joining Mölders up front. Altintop was given the role behind the
striker and was up against a BVB who adopted their regular 4-2-3-1 with Sahin
and Bender in holding positions. With Mölders chasing down Hummels whenever
he was in possession, it was left to Subotic to start many of BVB′s moves.
The Game and Analysis:
With just 80 seconds on the clock both sides had already had their fans on
tenterhooks as first Aubameyang latched onto a loose ball in the box before
opting to square the ball back for Lewandowski who was bundled from the ball,
then at the other end Altintop released Hahn who charged in on goal from the
right but found Langerak his master.
BVB enjoyed over 60% of possession in that first half and generally held sway
but lacked luck in front of goal as Reus only just failed to connect with a
fine Aubameyang pass (5 mins) and then Subotic fired just wide after a corner
on 16 minutes. They also had to beware of trouble at the other end, mind, as
the hosts strived to mount decisive counters down the flanks.
So, it was a fast, hard fought game, a fact borne out by the fact there had
already been 50 tackles with 22 minutes gone! It should also be noted that
Lewandowski ran his socks off albeit mostly in vain as the ball just couldn′
t find its way to him.
The hard-working Pole was not, though, involved in the opening goal.
Schmelzer advanced before sending in a curling cross from deep which duly
found a flying Aubameyang, free from his marker, who headed home
spectacularly. The man from Gabon celebrated his goal with a somersault while
Schmelzer trotted back having delivered his first ′assist′ since April 2011.
Five minutes before the excellent referee Kircher blew for half-time the
Black n Yellows almost doubled their lead. A one-two between Gündogan and
Aubameyang saw the Gabonese find Reus who, in turn, eluded the onrushing
Amslif before screwing back into the path of Großkreutz only for his shot to
stick between the legs of the Augsburg ′keeper. At the other end Langerak
misjudged the flight of a corner and was spared his blushed by a fine
goal-line clearance by Bender. Two minutes later Langerak made amends as he
turned a fierce Holzhauser drive around the post.
Augsburg, who last season never once contrived a win having gone a goal
behind, created another three good chanced before the break with Moravek
spurning the best of them when he screwed wide right on the final whistle.
BVB, on the other hand, had managed to waste a 1-0 win nine times last season
and here in Augsburg too, the travelling 4,000 BVB fans had their scarey
moments as the hosts fought for every ball as shown by the fact that with an
hour gone they had won more than half of the tackles! Borussia did, however,
have the first noteworthy chance of the second half when a Gündogan pass
played in Aubameyang only for Amsif to deny him with a fine save on 50
minutes. For the most part, though, BVB were now having to do more of the
defending.
Gündogan, having started the game with back problems, duly left the field
early with Kuba replacing him after 57 minutes. This led to Aubameyang to
switch wings with Reus moving to a more central role.
A cheeky effort from an acute angle by Reus saw Amsif produce another fine
save on 65 minutes and this effort marked a change in the game as BVB now
took control. The second goal soon followed as Reus accepted a long ball out
from Langerak before feeding Aubameyang in the box; the striker left Verhoek
for dead before guiding the ball into the corner to notch his, and BVB′s
second with 66 minutes gone.
The home side now wilted a little and Aubameyang completed his hat-trick when
he accepted a delightful Lewandowski pass, rounded the ′keeper and coolly
slotted home with eleven minutes remaining.
A Callsen-Bracker foul on Hofmann allowed Lewandowski to chalk up his seventh
goal in five outings against Augsburg and the game closed to the travelling
fans declaring BVB Champions elect!
