Indians acquire Phelps from Blue Jays
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians acquired designated hitter-first
baseman Josh Phelps from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday for Triple-A
first baseman Eric Crozier.
Phelps, 26, batted .237 with 12 homers and a team-leading 51 RBIs in 79
games with the Blue Jays, but he fell out of favor earlier this season
and was only seeing playing time against left-handers.
``This is the moment of opportunity to get a guy that we've liked for a
long time, watched and we can see a potential fit beyond this year,''
Indians general manager Mark Shapiro said. ``The short-term benefit is
that it improved our bench without a doubt.''
Nine of Phelps' homers came against left-handed pitchers, which made him
attractive to Cleveland. Last season, Phelps hit .268 with 20 home runs
and 66 RBIs in 119 games with Toronto.
``We've done a lot better against left-handers, but we need to improve
that area,'' Indians manager Eric Wedge said. ``The power he has from
the right side has been talked about the last couple of years.''
Crozier, who also plays the outfield, was batting .297 with 20 homers and
53 RBIs in 84 games for Triple-A Buffalo.
