Blue Jays watch
Kid catcher hanging in
By Mike Ganter
A tough night for catcher Guillermo Quiroz behind the plate did not hurt him
in interim manager John Gibbons' eyes.
Catching Miguel Batista, who can make even veteran catchers look like rookies
with all the movement he has on his pitches, the Jays were charged with four
wild pitches in Friday's loss, although many appeared to be catchable.
"I'm not worried about that," Gibbons said. "It was a tough night. Still, he
made a nice throw down to second to nail a guy and he came up with a hit late
in the game."
Gibbons had him right back in the lineup last night saying the Jays need to
see what they have.
Or, as Batista said after his start: "He's going to be our guy in the future,
so we have to get through these things."
LOOKING PAST T.O.?
If there was any hard feelings over the Texas Rangers' decision to throw
Kenny Rogers on just three days' rest at the Jays in order to make sure
he faces the Oakland A's in a potentially key matchup later in the week,
Gibbons wasn't letting on.
"A guy like (Rogers), a control finesse-type, is not going to be bothered
as much by short rest as someone else," Gibbons said. "They've got a big
series coming up and I think Rogers has something like 18 consecutive wins
in Oakland or something. I just think it makes good sense. All the games
are so big the last three weeks."
DELGADO ON THE ROAD
Carlos Delgado's 18th career homer at Ameriquest Field in Arlington is the
most by any visiting ball player. But the Jays' slugging first baseman has
put up some decent numbers at other parks, too. In descending order after
Texas they are: Tropicana Field in St. Pete's (12), Yankee Stadium (12),
and Seattle's former home, the Kingdome where he also hit 12.
DOWN ON THE FARM
The Blue Jays are down to one in the minor league post-season. The class-A
Charleston Alley Cats of the South Atlantic League were defeated by Hickory
7-3 Friday night and joined the Dunedin Blue Jays and Auburn Double Days as
members of the Jays organization to be swept in their opening round.
The New Hampshire Fisher Cats finished off Binghamton in their Eastern League
semi-final last night with a 5-2 win.
