GROSS IMPROVES
Interim manager John Gibbons has seen a lot of growth in left fielder Gabe
Gross, who is hitting .240 with two homers and 14 RBI in 22 games since being
called up on Aug. 7.
"From day one I saw good defence, good baserunning and some spurts at the
plate," Gibbons said of Gross. "Since then I've seen a little more consistency.
In the last couple of weeks we've run into some pretty good pitching and he's
held his own.
"I just see him getting better and better. It's confidence, getting a little
more relaxed and seeing the pitches. But he's got a good swing."
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
It was a rough homestand for centre fielder Vernon Wells, who went 1-for-5
in Sunday's finale. For the homestand, Wells hit just 6-for-39 (.154).
ON THE BEAM
Right fielder Alex Rios has hit safely in 18 of his past 21 games going
29-for-91 (.319) to raise his average to .297.
