Righty reliever hasn't pitched in Toronto's last nine games
ST. PETERSBURG -- Blue Jays manager John Gibbons offers a simple explanation for
the recent disappearance of Jason Frasor. The six other relievers in Toronto's
bullpen have climbed passed Frasor on the depth chart, leaving the pitcher with
little work and plenty of down time.

"The other guys have kind of worked their way ahead of him," Gibbons said. "If
those other guys are rested and we've got the lead or something, those are the

That came as news to Frasor, who was averaging 10 appearances a month until July
rolled around. In April, Frasor was Toronto's first choice to fill in for
injured closer B.J. Ryan. Now he's become the last resort in a bullpen he's
resided in for parts of four big-league seasons.

Part of the reason Frasor has only had four turns this month is the strong
performance by Toronto's rotation, combined with set roles for a few of his
fellow relievers. In July, the Jays' starters have turned in four complete games
and averaged roughly 6 1/3 innings through 25 games.

Toronto's bullpen currently ranks fourth in the Major Leagues with a 3.51 ERA,
and the group has been headed by setup men Scott Downs and Casey Janssen, as
well as closer Jeremy Accardo. The seventh, eighth and ninth innings have been
reserved for that trio, leaving Frasor without regular work.

Outside of two rough stretches this season, Frasor has pitched well. From April
28-May 3, the 29-year-old right-hander allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings over
three games. After settling back in for nearly two months, Frasor gave up seven
runs over three outings from June 28-July 2.

Since that second lapse, Frasor has only taken the mound three times, turning in
three scoreless frames in the process. The right-hander has limited opponents to
a .204 average, which is the best among Toronto relievers, and he ranks third in
the 'pen with 8.69 strikeouts per nine innings.

Frasor, who throws a side session every three days to keep fresh, hasn't
discussed his lack of work with Gibbons, but the pitcher did say he's talked to
pitching coach Brad Arnsberg and bullpen coach Bruce Walton. They've echoed
Gibbons' stance on the situation.

Contingency plan:
The rain that's poured down on the Tampa area over the past two days still is in
the forecast for Wednesday, which could put a damper on the first scheduled
rehab start for Toronto's A.J. Burnett. The right-hander is slated to pitch in a
Gulf Coast League contest at 10 a.m. ET in Dunedin, Fla.

Lining things up:
Gibbons shuffled the starting lineup on Tuesday in order to provide a day off
for left fielder Reed Johnson and designated hitter Frank Thomas. Second baseman
Aaron Hill filled in for Johnson in the leadoff spot, and Matt Stairs started in
left field. Backup catcher Curtis Thigpen served as Toronto's DH and batted
eighth.

The Blue Jays have signed left-hander Mark Redman to a Minor League deal, and

southpaw was 0-4 with an 11.63 ERA in six games with the Braves this year, but
Atlanta released Redman in May. In 2006, Redman was an All-Star with the Royals,
and he won a career-high 14 games with the Marlins in 2003.
