Notes: Zaun struggling at the plate
GM Ricciardi looks to Sept. 1; League expected back soon

ANAHEIM -- It was a perfect example of Gregg Zaun's recent fortunes. In the
second inning on Saturday, Toronto's catcher unloaded on a pitch from Angels
left-hander Joe Saunders and sent it slicing toward the gap in left-center field

As Zaun rounded first base, Angels center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. caught up
with the baseball on a dead sprint, snaring it out of the air to steal away a
would-be double. Zaun stopped and stood on the basepaths, staring out toward the
outfield before retreating slowly to the dugout.

Thanks to Matthews' acrobatic grab, Zaun's misfortunes increased to 22 straight
at-bats without a hit for the veteran catcher. Entering Saturday, Zaun was
hitting .210 with a .300 on-base percentage in August. Tough luck aside, there
have been a handful of contributing factors to the offensive woes that Zaun has
experienced lately.

Zaun said the strength in his right hand, which he broke back in April, hasn't
returned to 100 percent, which has forced him to battle through some mechanical
issues at the plate. When it comes to his recent struggles, the catcher also
cites his spot in the order. Batting eighth in an underachieving lineup has
taken Zaun away from his usual approach.

sometimes you have to expand your strike zone a little bit.

"I'm in a situation where, most of the time, for the betterment of the team, I
need to be a little bit more aggressive and maybe swing at a pitch that I

Batting eighth puts Zaun ahead of light-hitting John McDonald, who carried a
.208 average for July and August into Saturday's game. Zaun takes a lot of pride
in his ability to get on base -- he led the Jays in walks in 2005 -- but he said
hitting lower in the lineup has affected his opportunities.

September calling:
The clock continues to tick toward Sept. 1, when the Blue Jays can expand their
roster to 40 players. On Saturday, Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi said
there could be as many as five additions to the big league roster.

One of those appears to be outfielder Adam Lind, and the Jays will likely call
up either Sal Fasano or Robinzon Diaz to add a third catcher. Ricciardi added
that right-hander Josh Banks, who is 11-10 with a 4.81 ERA in 25 starts at
Triple-A, is another player who is "in the mix" for a promotion.

League update:
Blue Jays reliever Brandon League is also expected back in the bullpen after the
roster expands. League, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 5 with a
strained right oblique muscle, threw a simulated game in Florida this week.
Jays manager John Gibbons said League will likely be activated after two Minor
League rehab outings, either in the Gulf Coast League or with Class A Dunedin.

Reed Johnson's leadoff double on Saturday extended Toronto's streak to a club-
record 32 straight games with at least one double. The streak, which began on
July 22, broke the previous mark of 31, set in 2004. In the first 31 games of
the current run, the Jays doubled 80 times, including once in nine contests and
nine times in a win over the Yankees on Aug. 8.

Needs cleaning:
The Blue Jays have cycled five different players in and out of the cleanup spot,
which has been a black hole in Toronto's lineup this season. Among AL clubs, the
Jays' No. 4 hitters ranked 11th in on-base percentage (.325), 12th in home runs
(17) and slugging percentage (.418), and 14th in average (.247), RBIs (74) and
runs (62), entering Saturday.

Did you know?
Entering Saturday, Toronto third baseman Troy Glaus had gone 0-for-Anaheim since
leaving the Angels after the 2004 season. Glaus was 0-for-16 as a visitor at
Angel Stadium, which he called home for the first seven seasons of his career.
