Mailbag: Is Hill ready to hit second?
Beat reporter Jordan Bastian answers Jays fans' questions

I think that Aaron Hill's stats merit a shot at him batting second. He was the
most consistent hitter in the Jays' lineup last season. Do you think Toronto
should consider him for the No. 2 slot?-- Ryan A., Windsor, Ontario

It's no secret that the Blue Jays have pictured Hill moving into the second spot
of the batting order. Toronto manager John Gibbons has repeatedly said he'd like
to see Hill near the top of the order and, earlier this offseason, general
manager J.P. Ricciardi discussed trying Hill in the No. 2 spot this season.

With the addition of shortstop David Eckstein as the new leadoff man, though,
Hill may remain in the lower part of the lineup. The Jays have options for the
two-hole in Hill, Reed Johnson, Lyle Overbay, Vernon Wells, Alex Rios and Gregg
Zaun. Zaun and Overbay provide the only left-handed bats.

Personally, I think Hill would be a great fit for the second spot. The issue is
that the Jays have slow runners in Frank Thomas and Troy Glaus, who will likely
occupy the Nos. 4-5 spots. Rios or Wells would have his speed limited by batting
in the sixth spot, so putting those two in the Nos. 2-3 slots would seem to make
more sense.

If Rios and Wells hit consecutively near the top of the order, that bumps Hill
to the bottom again. I'm sure Gibbons will experiment with different
combinations during Spring Training in an effort to avoid frequent mixing and
matching during the regular season.

After reading about Miguel Olivo signing with the Royals, I scoured the list of
available catchers on the free-agent market. I didn't find any reason for
excitement. Does this mean the Blue Jays will stand pat with Zaun and Sal

For now, Zaun and Fasano project to be the Blue Jays' starting and backup
catcher, respectively. That doesn't mean Toronto is calling off its search now
that Olivo signed with Kansas City. Ricciardi indicated that the Jays have
discussed potential trades with clubs to address Toronto's No. 2 catcher job.

If the Jays don't add another catcher, the club appears to be content with
entering the season with Fasano as a temporary solution to back up Zaun. Fasano
would be temporary in the sense that he could fill that role until catching
prospect Robinzon Diaz is ready for a big league promotion later in the season.

options behind the plate, watch for Thigpen to challenge Fasano for the backup
job this spring.

I think Lind might be ready to thrive in a regular job with the Jays right now.
The problem is that Toronto already has a left fielder in Johnson. So, as things
currently stand, Lind appears to be headed to Triple-A Syracuse. Should Johnson
struggle or the Jays face an injury in the outfield, Lind will be back up with
the big league club in a hurry.

trade deadline in July.

The Jays have expressed interest in Bedard, but a one-for-one swap including
Burnett as the other piece wouldn't get the deal done. Baltimore is in a
rebuilding phase and wants to load up on prospects before seriously delving into
free agency. That being the case, it wouldn't make sense for the Orioles to
agree to a Bedard-for-Burnett trade.

gets done is if Burnett is one piece in a larger package -- and it'd likely cost
Toronto more than it's willing to give up at this point.

If Burnett elects to become a free agent, that's $24 million ($12 million in
each of the 2009-10 seasons) off the books for the Jays. That's a good start to
go after a decent arm, but not nearly enough to snag some of next winter's top-
tier talents. Without taking a few '09 contract options into account, some
potential free agents next offseason include C.C. Sabathia, Johan Santana, Ben
Sheets, Brad Penny, John Lackey, Jon Garland, Derek Lowe, Mark Mulder and Rich
Harden, among others.

Initially, Purcey was added to the 40-man roster to protect him during the Rule
5 Draft in early December. But, yes, there's certainly a chance that he could
crack the Jays' roster at some point during the season. Jesse Litsch made the
jump from Double-A to Toronto's rotation in 2007, so you can't rule out a
potential promotion for someone such as Purcey.

Honestly, it doesn't appear that either player will be punished by Major League
Baseball for being named in the Mitchell Report. Glaus had already been cleared
by the Commissioner's Office for being implicated in an SI.com report in
September. The fact that Zaun's alleged involvement took place seven years ago
makes it very unlikely that he'd face any repercussions, either.
