There is another reason this Blue Jays staff reminds many of 1985. One August day sitting in the dugout at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Rance Mulliniks came up the tunnel and asked no one in particular: "Hey, who is starting the second game of the series for us when we get to Minnesota?" "Tom Filer and I are," wise cracked reliever Dennis Lamp. Filer had a five-and-fly reputation. He made nine starts, working 442/3 innings, an average of less than five innings per start. Yet Filer was 7-0 as the Jays won their first American League East title. These Jays have dominant starting pitching -- a team earned run average of 3.71 going into last night's game against the Los Angeles Angels. These Jays might be the best staff assembled since 1985. But guess what ... it won't hold up when the Jays are using two starters a game as they did in two of the three games in Philadelphia. In an 8-0 hole on Friday, after David Purcey made a fast exit to catch the final flight to triple-A Syracuse, the Jays went to Jesse Litsch in the fourth and he worked three innings, throwing 49 pitches. Litsch had worked 52/3 innings three days before in Minneapolis and was going to be bumped due to Monday's off day. Ace Roy Halladay got the final out of the sixth on Sunday, then worked a scoreless seventh and eighth in a 6-5 win over the Phillies. He threw 23 pitches Granted, rain was the cause for the deck chairs being shuffled. First, a two hour, four-minute delay forced both clubs to burn their starters Shaun Marcum and Kyle Kendrick. A 39-minute delay in the sixth led to Halladay making his first relief appearance in almost seven years. Bobby Cox used to use Jimmy Key on his throw day to get out a left-handed hitter or two in 1985. Manager John Gibbons said Halladay overheard him talking with his coaches about using a pitcher as a pinch runner. "I walked by and he pointed to his cleats," Gibbons said. Halladay had switched from his turf shoes. "I said 'you got to be kidding me, you're not pinch running for anybody.' "Halladay pointed to the bullpen." Halladay had done his side session on Saturday. "Really we were only trying to get him a hold to give him some help in future contract negotiations," Gibbons joked. So, instead of starting last night, Halladay starts Friday against Kansas City Royals. At the season's start, the Jays rolled out their starters in this order: Halladay, A.J. Burnett, last night's starter Dustin McGowan, Marcum and Litsch. Thanks to Burnett having to work the 14th inning against the Oakland A's and the tandem starters used two days in Philadelphia the rotation now lines up this way until the all-star break: McGowan, Marcum, Burnett, Halladay and Litsch. What would have happened had the Phillies scored another run off B.J. Ryan to tie the score in the bottom of the ninth? "If they had tied it, we had Scott Downs for the 10th," Gibbons said, "and if neither team scored well ... Hector Luna might have had the 11th." Starters are creatures of habit like race horses. They need their routine. Break it and you'll have a broken stud. (這是本篇文章最重要的一句) 先發投手是像賽馬般有著習性的生物。他們需要規律的作息 如果你破壞了這規律作息,那你就等於毀了他。 BRIEFLY The Chicago Cubs and another National League team have inquired about dealing for catcher Robinzon Diaz, who is at Syracuse. FINALLY In the mock draft leading up to the June 5 draft, Baseball America has the Jays selecting Wichita State Shockers third baseman Conor Gillaspie. Gillaspie is hitting .403 with seven doubles and 65 RBIs. Other possibilities with the 17th pick are Arizona State third baseman Brett Wallace, South Carolina shortstop Reese Havens, California first baseman David Cooper or infielder Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C. Lawrie leaves for the Dominican Republic with the rest of the Canadian National Junior Team today.
