Purcey to attack strike zone in rematch

TORONTO -- David Purcey has already dominated the Rays once this season. Less
than two weeks ago, the Blue Jays rookie simply overpowered Tampa Bay's lineup,
using pinpoint control and a knee-buckling curveball to spin the first complete
game of his career.

The only thing lacking from that outing was a place in the win column for
Purcey, who was outdueled by Rays right-hander Matt Garza in that 1-0 affair on
Aug. 27. On Sunday, Purcey and Garza will match wits again in the finale of a
three-game set between the clubs at Rogers Centre.

Following a rough start his last time out, Purcey will be aiming to regain the
form he displayed during that performance against Tampa Bay. On Tuesday, the
6-foot-5 left-hander struggled with his control in an abbreviated effort against
the Twins. Shortly after his three-inning outing, Purcey identified what went
wrong.

"I dropped my arm slot a little bit," Purcey explained after his start against
the Twins. "I went back to check the film on that and I was slinging the ball up
there a little bit, instead of driving it to the plate like I have been. That's
why I was falling behind in the counts.

"It was hit and miss. Occasionally, I'd get my arm right up to where I wanted it

Purcey's arm slot certainly wasn't an issue in his earlier start against the
Rays. In that appearance, the soft-spoken southpaw tied a Toronto rookie record
with 11 strikeouts, including eight on four pitches or fewer. Purcey registered
20 first-pitch strikes to the 29 hitters he faced that night, and he threw three
balls to a hitter just once.

Purcey finished with 92 pitches -- just 22 for balls -- in that eight-inning gem
in St. Petersburg. On Tuesday, Purcey never found that kind of command, needing
86 pitches (47 strikes) to get through three frames. When it was all said and
done, Purcey had allowed five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two
walks.

inning on Saturday, Blue Jays catcher Gregg Zaun snapped an 0-for-21 skid at the
plate, dating back to July 30. ... Zaun's walk-off grand slam in the 13th inning
on Saturday was Toronto's first walk-off home run since Sept. 15, 2006. It also
marked only the second walk-off grand slam (first in extra innings) in team
history. George Bell also accomplished the feat on Sept. 4, 1988. ... Toronto
ace Roy Halladay is the club's all-time leader with a .668 (129-64) winning
percentage. ... Jays right fielder Alex Rios leads the team with 63 extra-base
hits this season. On Saturday, Rios clubbed his 43rd double of the year,
matching his single-season career high, first set in 2007. ... Toronto is 6-7 in
extra-inning games this season.
