[News] Blue Jays CF Wells out for a month
DUNEDIN, FLORIDA (TICKER) —Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells is on
the shelf again.
Wells is expected to be sidelined for a month after straining his left
hamstring during a workout Monday at the team's spring training facility. He
will undergo an MRI to further evaluate the damage.
“Right now, preliminarily, I'd say he's going to miss four weeks,”Blue Jays
general manager J.P. Ricciardi said.
Wells, 30, has been a disappointment since signing a seven-year, $126 million
contract with Toronto following the 2006 season.
In 2007, he batted just .245 with 16 home runs and 80 RBI, then endured an
injury-plagued 2008 campaign that included two stints on the disabled list.
Wells fractured his left wrist in May, and was sidelined again in July due to
a hamstring injury. He was limited to 108 games, hitting .300 with 20 homers
and 78 RBI.
Wells has hit 36 homers in the last two seasons combined - just four more than
he had in 2006, when he batted .303 and drove in 106 runs.
