South American governing body CONMEBOL have announced that groups for the
2011 Copa America will be drawn on November 11, as the continent looks
forward to the 43rd edition of the world's oldest national team competition,
this time hosted by Argentina.
CONMEBOL revealed on their official website that the draw will be held in the
city of La Plata, whose remodelled Unico de La Plata stadium will host the
first game. The tournament will begin in La Plata on July 2 and last three
weeks, with the final taking place in River Plate's Monumental on July 24.
The tournament will boast all 10 member nations of CONMEBOL plus guest teams,
CONCACAF's Mexico and, provisionally, Japan from the AFC. Due to a dispute
over teams from different confederations playing in each other's tournaments
Mexico have agreed to send their Olympic squad; Japan are still waiting for
official clearance to take part. If they are cleared the 12 teams will form
three groups of four for the first round, with the three winners and runners
up plus the two best third placed sides going through to the last eight.
Argentina will be looking for revenge on home soil after losing 3-0 to Brazil
in the final in 2007. Uruguay will be another team looking to shime,
consolidating a fantastic fourth place finish in the World Cup.
