Santos wonderkid Neymar tried to brush off suggestions that his side had been
weakened by the absence of fellow 'Santasticos' Robinho, Andre and Ganso,
insisting that every member of the Peixe was a superstar.
The quartet, formed when Robinho rejoined Santos in the new year to link up
with home grown talents Neymar, Ganso and Andre, took Brazil by storm this
year and were dubbed the 'Santasticos' as they stormed to a Paulista/Copa do
Brasil double.
After lifting the Copa however Robinho returned to Manchester City en route
to a deadline day move to Milan, while Andre transferred to the Ukraine with
Dynamo Kiev. Worse was to come for the Peixe when Ganso recently tore his
cruciate ligaments, putting himself out of action for six months.
Despite the new faces in the Santos dressing room however, Neymar insisted in
today's press conference that his team was still full of quality.
"Now there are 11 Santastiscos. We lost important players, but the group is
still strong and full of quality," the 18-year-old asserted.
Although the departures of Andre and Robinho were expected, Ganso's injury
was a hammer blow to the club and Neymar felt it more than most due to being
a 'little brother' to the number 10, as he admitted at the time. And the
forward confirmed that the midfielder had left a sizeable hole in the team.
"Of course we are still feeling his absence. He is a crack. He is a player on
a different level, who cannot be replaced easily. But we will have to get
used to playing without him," Neymar concluded.
