Brazil coach Mano Menezes praised his young charges despite falling to defeat
against Argentina, insisting that the loss was harsh on a Selecao who were on
the same level as their opponents throughout.
A last minute beauty from Lionel Messi gave Argentina a 1-0 victory, their
first over their South American rivals for five years. Menezes stayed upbeat
however, rightly pointing out that his inexperienced charges were more than a
match for the Albiceleste.
"Brazil was an equal adversary against Argentina. They just had one or two
chances in the last 45 minutes, and we were much closer to scoring in the
second half. Maybe this time my players felt their lack of experience,
because you don't let your adversaries score when they did," the coach said
in a post-match press conference.
"It was a little bit frustrating, a draw would have been a fair result,
analysing what both teams did. We failed on the last ball to define the game."
Menezes moved on to single out Ronaldinho, who returned to the Brazil team
after a long time in the international wilderness.
"Ronaldinho did well, taking responsibility for creating offensive moves. He
was substituted because of his physical condition and not because of his
performance. We brought him back to the Selecao at the right time."
And the coach, who tasted defeat for the first time on the Brazil bench,
finished by promising to come back stronger for the Copa America and beyond.
"Defeat always puts us down, but we understand the moment and the way that it
happened. We will keep seeking improvements for next year."
