Tigers release Gary Sheffield

LAKELAND, Fla.—Despite owing him $14 million this season,
the Detroit Tigers released outfielder Gary Sheffield on Tuesday,
following an injury-riddled 2008 in which he hit just .225.
The 41-year-old Sheffield has a .292 average and has 499 home runs over
21 major-league seasons.
Once he clears waivers, he can sign with any team for the major-league
minimum of $400,000
