1.Julio Teheran , RHP
The Braves may have intended to take it more slowly with Teheran, but the
highly-thought of right-hander performed his way across three levels. He's
got three at least above-average pitches and he can command them all. Already
ahead of the curve, he's made another jump, joining the Triple-A rotation at
age 20.
2.Arodys Vizcaino , RHP
The Braves got Vizcaino from the Yankees in the December 2009 Javier Vazquez
deal, and they were excited about how he was throwing in his first season
with the organization. He had earned a promotion up to Class A Advanced
Myrtle Beach in June before he was shut down for two months with an elbow
problem. He did return and is now healthy, though some are concerned about
his durability. When he's fine, Vizcaino has plus stuff and command,
particularly his fastball and curve. Still only 20, he's back in the Carolina
League in 2011.
3.Randall Delgado , RHP
In a system with some pretty good arms, it was Delgado who topped them all
with 162 strikeouts in 2010. Like others on this list, the 21-year-old
Panamanian has plus stuff and pretty good command to go with it. He's had
some control issues at times, but has shown the ability to adjust along the
way. He got a taste of big league camp this spring as a member of the 40-man
roster and is taking that experience with him to Double-A this season.
4.Carlos Perez , LHP
Stop if you've heard this one before. The Braves have yet another young
Latino arm causing excitement in the organization. This one is left-handed
and still a teenager. Perez impressed in Rookie League Danville and even made
two starts in full-season Class A Rome last year. He's projectable and could
have three above-average to plus pitches when all is said and done. He'll
pitch all year at age 19 atop the Rome rotation.
5.Christian Bethancourt , C
After a really solid United States debut in 2009, Bethancourt's full-season
debut was a bit of a disappointment. The Panamanian backstop hit
.251/.276/.331 with Rome, though he did throw out better than 39 percent of
would-be basestealers. Still only 19, he's got all the tools to be a
successful all-around catcher; he just needs to apply them more. Even though
he's repeating in Rome, he's young for his level.
6.Matt Lipka , SS
The teammate of Dodgers first-round pick Zach Lee, Lipka was a two-sport
standout in high school whom the Braves were thrilled to get at No. 35
overall last June. A tremendous athlete, 18-year-old Lipka has plus speed and
knows how to use it (21 steals in his debut last summer). He should hit for
average and has a pretty good approach at the plate. While some questioned
where he'd play defensively, the Braves feel he will stick at shortstop, with
the arm and range to excel there. His makeup is off the charts as well,
allowing him to handle a full-season assignment in Rome.
7.Edward Salcedo , SS/3B
The Braves pushed Salcedo aggressively in 2010, moving him from the Dominican
Summer League all the way to full-season Rome, and he was clearly overmatched
(.197/.239/.295) in 54 games. He struck out 56 times in 193 at-bats and made
28 errors at shortstop. But the tools for the 19-year-old are undeniable. He
has outstanding bat speed that should lead to plenty of power as he matures.
The high error totals don't speak to his defensive ability, which is solid,
particularly his arm. He was signed as a shortstop, and while he's still
seeing some time there for Rome this year, he's also playing third, the spot
many feel will be right for him when all is said and done.
8.Paul Clemens , RHP
An eighth-round pick out of junior college in 2008, Clemens has always
impressed with his power stuff. The Braves have used him in the past as both
a reliever and starter, with mixed results. He had a solid 2010, earning a
promotion while appearing in 35 games (just eight starts). Now it looks like
things are coming together for the lanky right-hander, as he continues to
develop and command his stuff, with his breaking ball and changeup giving him
weapons in addition to a fastball he can get easily into the mid-90s. The
Braves sent him out as a starter this year, part of the rotation for Double-A
Mississippi.
9.Tyler Pastornicky , SS
Originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 2008 Draft,
Pastornicky came to the Braves in the Yunel Escobar-for-Alex Gonzalez swap
last July. The shortstop has always shown the ability to run -- he stole 92
bases in 2009-10 combined -- and isn't afraid to take a walk, pointing to a
future career as a leadoff hitter if he shows he can hit. That started to
happen as Pastornicky began his first full season in Double-A (he went there
following the trade last summer). He has the skills to stay at his premium
position defensively and is now looking like Atlanta's shortstop of the
future.
10.Andrelton Simmons , SS
The Curacao native jumped on the map a year ago at Western Oklahoma State
Junior College to land in the second round (No. 70 overall). Often, amateurs
drafted as shortstops have to move to another position, but one of Simmons'
best qualities is his ability to stay at the premium position. He's got
outstanding instincts at shortstop with a plus arm that also allowed him to
touch the mid-90s as a pitcher. While his glove is ahead of his bat, he's not
an all-defense type, and he should hit enough to be an everyday shortstop in
the future. The Braves sent him up to the Class A Advanced Carolina League
for his first full season and he's responded to the challenge.
