Who are the favorites to win the NL Rookie of the Year?

This season's National League Rookie of the Year race isn't as easy to figure out as it has been in the past. In 2010, everyone anticipated the award going to either Jason Heyward(notes) or Buster Posey(notes). Saying those two men ran away from the pack is an understatement. What NL stars have the best chance at taking home the award this year in a much closer field? Freddie Freeman The Atlanta Braves' first basemen has the second best batting average (.272) out of all NL rookies. He also has the second best home run and RBI totals with nine and 34. After starting the season off poorly, nobody would have anticipated Freeman being in contention. He has been a big reason for the Braves' turnaround from their poor April start. Darwin Barney The Chicago Cubs' second basemen owns the NL's best rookie average at .294. My biggest knock on Barney is his lack of patience at the plate. In 64 games, Barney has drawn just eight walks. One plus is he doesn't strike out a lot (26). Danny Espinosa Despite his horrible batting average (.238), the Washington Nationals' shortstop leads all NL rookies in home runs and RBIs with 15 and 48, respectively. With nine steals, he also holds the lead in that category. His average needs to improve drastically to have a real chance. Brandon Beachy The Braves' starting pitcher has been amazing all season. He has played a big part in helping the Braves to the second best ERA in all of baseball. In 10 starts, he is 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA. Since coming off the disabled list last week, Beachy has gone 2-0 with 20 strikeouts in two starts. Dillon Gee The New York Mets have been lucky this season. Part of their luck is because of Gee. The rookie is 8-1 this season with a 3.32 ERA and has been overlooked in most ROY discussions. He is the only NL rookie to throw a complete game and has made the most starts of all rookies. Craig Kimbrel The Braves' closer has been great this season, making fans forget that Billy Wagner(notes) even retired. He is 2-2 this season with a 2.63 ERA with 23 saves in 28 chances.
