WASHINGTON – Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman has two more months to make his case for National League rookie of the year, but he got a pretty good head start with his July. Freeman was named National League rookie of the month Wednesday after leading all major league rookies in hits (38), batting average (.362) and on-base percentage (.362) in 27 games in July. He led all NL rookies with six home runs, 17 runs and he tied for the rookie lead with 18 RBIs. Freeman is riding a career-high 18-game hitting streak, which he started by hitting safely in his last 15 games in July. He collected hits in 23 of 27 July games overall. “It’s another month done closer to where we need to be,” said Freeman, turning the focus toward his team when asked about the award. “It’s a great honor, but we need to win games. I think we won 16 games last month.” After going 2-for-4 in the Braves win over the Nationals on Wednesday, Freeman ’s season average was up to .298. Freeman is now leading the Braves in hits with 118 and is second in doubles (26), RBIs (54) and runs (51). “Some guys get big-headed and confident (with success),” Braves third baseman Chipper Jones said. “Other guys, you see them just get comfortable. It just seems like Freddie is starting to get really comfortable and you’re starting to see at-bats that middle of the lineup hitters have.
