Atlanta up season-high eight; Uggla homers twice as Beachy cruises

ATLANTA -- The Braves understood the importance of the final seven games of this homestand.
With games on deck against both the Giants and D-backs, the Braves found themselves playing at Turner Field against their primary competition for a coveted playoff spot come October.
So far, so good.
The Braves dominated the D-backs, 8-1, on Saturday, improving to 5-1 against those two National League West clubs on this homestand, while pushing their NL Wild Card lead to a season-high eight games in the process. Atlanta, which has won 12 of its last 16 games, took three out of four earlier in the week from last season's World Series champions.
"That's our main goal right now, is getting into the playoffs," second baseman Dan Uggla said. "How we've got to do that is create separation between all the other teams that are on our butts. So far that's what we've done. We've got to keep going in this direction."
Brandon Beachy was the latest pitcher to deliver an impressive performance for the Braves, throwing six strong innings of one-run ball while tallying his first career RBI on a single in the second. He gave up four hits in the win while striking out seven.
In all, Braves starters are 3-1 with a 2.19 ERA in the club's last six games.
"We're playing every game with a purpose, and that's to get to the playoffs," Beachy said. "When there's stuff on the line, it's definitely more fun."
But it wasn't just Beachy who was getting the best of the D-backs. Uggla paced the Braves with his fourth multi-homer game of the season, as he gave Atlanta a first-inning lead on a two-run blast before tacking on a solo shot in the seventh.
"I was trying to go in, in off the plate," said D-backs starter Wade Miley, who was making his Major League debut. "Left it up back over the middle to a high fastball hitter. He's a great hitter swinging the bat well, and he hit it out."
Beachy had spotted Arizona an early advantage when Miguel Montero delivered an RBI double with two outs in the first.
But after Uggla's blast helped Beachy reclaim the advantage, the right-hander went on to retire each of the next 12 hitters he faced -- five via strikeout -- before Collin Cowgill tallied a two-out single that kicked off the glove of shortstop Alex Gonzalez in the fifth.
"The ball gets on you quick," Montero said of Beachy. "He's got good command, good breaking ball, pretty good changeup. He threw a lot of strikes, and when you throw strikes, you get quick outs, and that's what he did today."
With Beachy in control, the Braves continued to pour it on against Miley, who was filling in for Jason Marquis, who is out with a fractured right fibula.
Miley -- who grew up in southeastern Louisiana rooting for the Braves -- struggled in his first start, allowing five runs in four-plus innings. After Uggla's blast gave the Braves the lead, Beachy added on to it with his run-scoring single to left, his second hit of the season.
"I think the only person he threw any offspeed [pitches] to was Chipper [Jones]," Uggla said. "He was coming right after us. That's all you can ask out of your pitcher is to go right after the opposing team."
Jones and Freddie Freeman added RBIs in the fifth on a single and sacrifice fly, respectively, before the lead ballooned in the seventh. Uggla led off the frame with his second homer of the night, before Freeman followed seven pitches later with a shot of his own.
"This is the kind of run we've been looking for," Uggla said. "The offense is getting rolling, we're getting good starts out of our pitchers. The whole team right now is doing what we need to be doing in order to win games."
Beachy, who is 3-0 with a 2.48 ERA in his last six starts, ran into little trouble. After Montero's double got Arizona on the board, Beachy kept the D-backs in check until Cowgill's fifth-inning single. That's when Miley followed with a single of his own, but Beachy struck out Bloomquist to end the threat.
"Beachy's great to play behind," Uggla said. "He knows what he's trying to do. He attacks the zone, works quick and keeps you in the game."
In his final inning, Beachy issued a two-out walk to Montero, but center fielder Michael Bourn ended the frame with a spectacular running grab at the wall to rob Paul Goldschmidt of a hit.
"Having Michael out there in center, he's going to run down anything," Beachy said. "If you hit it up there and it stays in the park, he's going to catch it. That's comforting."
What else is comforting is the Braves' position in the standings. Even if they go one game under .500 for the remainder of the season, the Giants would have to go 25-10 the rest of the way to tie them for the NL Wild Card lead.
"We're steadily improving," Beachy said. "And most of that is we've got guys getting healthy and getting back in the swing of things. That's what happens. We've got a lot of talent on this team, and it's starting to show."
國聯外卡排名:

Atlanta 75 52 .591 -
San Francisco 67 60 .528 8.0
St. Louis 66 60 .524 8.5
各位看倌,只剩下一個多月的比賽,雖然局勢會隨時變盤,但如果Atlanta Braves
都穩定的發展下去的話,應該會拿到外卡的資格,況且最近是勝多敗少了。
