With the 21st overall pick in the draft, the Braves went with the hometown
kid and selected righthander Luke Sims from Brookwood High in Snellville, Ga.
Sims has an athletic build and throws his fastball in the 90-93 mph range,
topping out at 97. He shows a power breaking ball that is his best secondary
offering and has an excellent track record of success on the high school
showcase circuit and during his high school career.

After a relatively down year in the typical hotbed of Georgia, this
right-hander has the chance to put the region back firmly on the amateur
prospect map.
Sims features two above-average pitches. His fastball can run up to 94 mph,
sitting in the 91-92 mph range, with above-average life. His curve is also
above average at times, with a three-quarter tight rotation to it. He has
plus mound presence and aggressiveness, leaving some to wonder if he'll be a
closer some day.
For him to start, Sims will have to vastly improve a changeup that he only
shows while warming up right now. He does throw strikes, especially with his
fastball, though his overall command isn't quite as sharp. With his
athleticism, arm strength and poise, though, his development will be watched
closely this coming spring.

Lucas Sims

Sims was close to unhittable in his start against Highlands Ranch on
Wednesday, giving up just one knock over six innings while striking out 11.
His fastball sat between 91-93 mph with a devastating curveball and a
changeup that has improved since the Prospect Classic. He’s currently
committed to Clemson, but there’s a real chance he’ll be taken in the first
20 picks of June's draft.
