Seeking infield depth, the Milwaukee Brewers today claimed utility infielder
Luis Cruz off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates as baseball’s winter
meetings started in Indianapolis.
Cruz, 25, batted .214 with two RBIs in 27 games with the Pirates last season.
He started 14 games at shortstop and four at second base.
He started the season with Pittsburgh, was sent down to Class AAA
Indianapolis three weeks later, then was recalled on July 10 and finished the
season with the Pirates. He batted .253 with three home runs and 23 RBIs in
66 games at Indianapolis.
Milwaukee has 38 players on its 40-man roster.
The Brewers also announced that right-handed reliever Mark DiFelice had
surgery last week to repair partial tears of the labrum and rotator cuff in
his throwing shoulder.
DiFelice told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he likely will miss the
2010 season. He was 4-1 with a 3.66 earned-run average in 59 games before
going on the disabled list in September.
