TOP CANDIDATE TO SURPRISE: OF Jim Edmonds didn't play in 2009, and he turns 40 in late June, so no one knows what to expect from him. But Edmonds seems driven to get back in the fray, and with all three starting outfielders batting from the right side, the left-handed hitter could wedge his way into at least semi-regular playing time. He is a proven winner. TOP CANDIDATE TO DISAPPOINT: CF Carlos Gomez played his way out of favor in Minnesota by failing to utilize his blazing speed, as he didn't get on base enough. He supposedly was the key to the trade that sent LHP Johan Santana to the Mets, but now he is with another club. New pitching coach Rick Peterson worked with Macha in Oakland and with Willie Randolph, the Brewers' bench coach, when he managed the Mets, so these guys know each other. Hitting coach Dale Sveum made needed improvements in the team on-base percentage last year. McGehee was a solid run-producer behind Fielder last year, but Hart also has batted fifth for extended periods over his career. Gerut is a sure-thing as a backup outfielder, but Edmonds must prove he still has it after sitting out the 2009 season. Kottaras and Treanor both have been backup catchers in the majors, but Treanor is a non-roster player. LHP Zach Braddock blossomed after being switched from a starting role to relief, and he will get a good look in spring training. Braddock performed well in the Arizona Fall League and is one to watch.
