Bucks expose Strickland to expansion draft
Auburn Hills, Mich. -
The Milwaukee Bucks, according to a league source, have decided to
protect forward Marcus Haislip and expose guard Erick Strickland to
the National Basketball Association expansion draft.
As of now, Bucks center Brian Skinner is also included on the list of
unprotected players but he is expected to opt out of his contract and
become a free agent later this month and thus not be subjected to the
expansion draft.
The expansion Charlotte Bobcats, who will begin play next season, will
stock their roster by selecting players that were not protected by the
other teams. Charlotte must select at least 14 players but cannot pick
more than one player from any team.
The expansion draft will be held June 22.
The Bucks have 13 players on their roster and three - Toni Kukoc,
Damon Jones, and Brevin Knight - will become free agents at the end of
the season and will not be subject to the expansion draft.
That leaves nine players on the roster and the Bucks were allowed to
protect eight. Milwaukee is expected to protect seven players -
Michael Redd, T.J. Ford, Dan Gadzuric, Desmond Mason, Daniel Santiago,
Joe Smith and Keith Van Horn.
That leaves Strickland and Haislip, and the Bucks have decided to protect
Haislip and expose Strickland to expansion. Haislip played in 31 games last
season, averaging 3.0 points, 1.7 rebounds and 8.5 minutes. Strickland played
in 43 games, averaging 5.4 points, 2.1 assists, and 13.3 minutes. Strickland
was a team tri-captain.
When contacted Tuesday, Bucks general manager Larry Harris said that he was
not allowed to comment on the expansion list.
Detroit and the Los Angeles Lakers will make their decisions on which players
to protect after the NBA Finals.
