San Antonio - Detroit's Larry Brown, who coached the U.S. Olympic team last
summer, got a chance to see the University of Utah's Andrew Bogut play for
Australia and came away impressed with the 7-foot center.
"I was really blown away watching him play," Brown said, referring to the
player under strong consideration by the Milwaukee Bucks to be selected with
the first overall pick in the NBA draft Tuesday. "He was very skilled, like a
poor man's Bill Walton. He could pass, he had great hands, he had a really good
touch around the basket. He wasn't unbelievably athletic, but athletic enough.
And real long. It's so difficult to find big players.
"Coach (Dean) Smith always used to tell me, 'Find great players with big feet
and big hands. You can't teach either one of those things.' I think he has
that."
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who assisted Brown with Team USA said, "(Bogut)
was outstanding. His talent speaks for itself. He's got great hands, he can
shoot it, he's got the moves on the block and he can play out on the floor.
"But what really impressed me the most is he's a fantastic passer. He's really
a big-time passer and he really understands the game. A very gifted individual."
